Schoolchildren visiting our Matlock headquarters found out about the building’s role in the Second World War and got a first glimpse of the commemorative D-Day 80 flag as part of their tour.
Smedley's Hydro, now County Hall, was home to the Intelligence Training Centre, later renamed the School of Military Intelligence, as well as the School of Air Photography.
Derbyshire County Council Civic Chairman Councillor Tony Kemp (right), and Vice Civic Chairman Councillor Kewal Singh Athwal are pictured unveiling the flag with schoolchildren from Castle View Primary School.
The flag, which we’ll be flying at County Hall until 13 June, commemorates 80 years since D-Day on 6 June 1944, the invasion of Normandy by Allied powers, and the start of liberating western Europe from the Nazis.
Could you serve up a cooling ice-cream or ‘coffee to go’ for visitors at our busy country parks?

We’re showcasing the amazing work that takes place across our county by individuals and organisations doing inspiring work in the community and helping each other.
The Derbyshire Spirit can be found in every street, village and town. This week we’re shining the spotlight on staff from Griffith Foods in Somercotes, who swapped sauces and spices for spades to support a project to plant a Million Trees across Derbyshire by 2030.
They pulled on their boots and turned out to plant trees at Brook Park – a 37-hectare site with specially recreated limestone grassland on the site of the former Shirebrook Colliery.
And not only did they lend a bit of muscle, Griffiths Foods also donated £2,500 towards the cost of the trees. In total 600 trees were planted with the help of three members of local charity Groundwork which helps to manage the site on behalf of landowners The Land Trust.
Do you know an individual or organisation which goes above and beyond to help others? Let us know by emailing derbyshire.spirit@derbyshire.gov.uk
And if you’ve planted any trees since June 2021 we’d love it if you would add them to the million trees map The total number of trees planted has just topped half a million!

We’ve been getting a good response to our survey on ‘active travel’ in Belper, Glossop and Ilkeston but there’s still time to have your say.
Our survey to get people's views about active travel – which includes walking, cycling or using a scooter, mobility scooter or wheelchair is live until Monday 24 June.
We’re asking how you get around in these three towns and what improvements do you think should be made to make walking, cycling and other forms of active travel an easier option.
Have your say on the draft ‘Active Travel Masterplans’ which have been drawn up for each of the three towns to suggest a range of measures which would make active travel safer, more convenient and more appealing to a wider range of people.
