Home Library Service

Home Library Service

We provide a free home delivery service to Derbyshire residents who need it either on a permanent or temporary basis.

The service is for anyone who finds it difficult to visit a library or mobile library, or carry their books home.

This could be due to:

  • disability
  • limited mobility
  • illness
  • caring responsibilities

When you apply for the service, we'll phone you to find out a bit about you, and to tell you more about how the service works. We'll also ask you about what what kind of things you'd like us to deliver. We'll then arrange a visit to follow this up in more detail.

One of our home library assistants will then arrange to visit you once every 4 weeks.

We deliver to people in their own home as well as those in care homes.

We also offer a Friends & Family service for those who have a family member, carer or friend able to visit the library on their behalf.

If you'd like to become one of our home library service customers, or know someone who does, please get in touch:

Adult Book Recommendations June 2024

New Adult Books

We’ve chosen to highlight three books published recently for you to enjoy. You can reserve them via our online catalogue.

The Discreet Charm of the Big Bad Wolf by Alexander McCall Smith

The Department of Sensitive Crimes is downsizing in light of a recent downturn of sensitive crime, and staff members are wondering who among them will be transferred elsewhere. As the bickering between colleagues intensifies, Ulf tries his best to stay above the fray. But when Anna, a longtime friend and coworker, appears to blame him for an old case that went sideways, it seems she may be putting her own job prospects above their friendship. In the midst of all this, Ulf embarks on an important inquiry: a man's cabin has mysteriously disappeared and Ulf is tasked with finding out what happened. How exactly does one steal a house? And, more to the point, how does one track down a stolen house? Meanwhile, a promising veterinary treatment for deafness in dogs has been announced, and Ulf's dog, Martin, might be the perfect patient.

The Midnight Feast by Lisa Foley

Midsummer, the Dorset coast. Guests gather for the opening of The Manor hotel, the new jewel on the Dorset coastline. The champagne is flowing, the guest list sparkling, the sun setting on an unforgettable summer solstice. But under the cloak of celebration, something dark is stirring. The Manor has a secret history; built in the shadows of an ancient wood. Now old friends and enemies are creeping out of the shadows. And they'll soon discover what other deadly secrets come out at night . . .

The Burial Plot by Elizabeth Macneal

London, 1839. With the cemeteries full and money to be made in death, tricksters Crawford and Bonnie survive on wicked schemes and ill-gotten coin. But one blistering evening, their fortunes flip. A man lies in a pool of blood at Bonnie's feet and now she needs to disappear. Crawford secures her a position as lady's maid in a grand house on the Thames. As Bonnie comes to understand the family - the eccentric Mr Moncrieff, obsessively drawing mausoleums for his dead wife, and their peculiar daughter Cissie, scribbling imaginary love letters to herself - she begins to question what secrets are lying behind the house's paper-thin walls and whether her own presence here was planned from the beginning. Because Crawford is watching, and perhaps he is plotting his greatest trick yet . . .

Children's Book Recommendations

One of our favourite things to do is recommend amazing children's books to you! This month we recommend you check out these titles:

Twice Upon a Time by Michelle Harrison

When the Morrow twins, Merry and Spike, arrive at dusty old Fox House, they think spending their holidays there is going to be dull. But they soon discover that there are secrets to the old house. A missing woman, a baby left on the doorstep, a locked study . . . As the mysteries pile up, the girls begin to investigate, using their own secret to help them: they can stop time! What happened in this old house? And can their strange powers help them solve a decades-old crime?

Alex vs Axel: The Impossible Quests by Sam Copeland

Alex is a normal, everyday kid, living in a normal, everyday city. Axel is a monster-slaying hero, living in a world of magic. Unfortunately, when the two boys mysteriously swap places, each of them ends up being mistaken for the other. With zero experience of heroism, Alex is thrust into an epic quest to defeat the evil Felonius Gloam, who has stolen the Book of Lifetales and is using it to unravel the very fabric of the world of Aërth. Meanwhile, Axel is faced with double maths, a gran who's six months behind on the rent, and a crucial chess tournament he's got to win - when he doesn't even know how to play. Can the two boys complete their Impossible Quests and find a way back to their own lives, or will they both discover they don't have a life to come back to . . . ?

The Mystery of the Forever Weekend by Lisa Thompson

Cory dreads Sunday evenings. It’s school the next day, where a bully is picking on him and he’s struggling to keep up in class. The night before a Monday that will include a maths test and another lonely lunch break, Cory wishes that the weekend would never end… and when he wakes up the next day, time has reset itself to Sunday morning. This is amazing! He can lounge about all day watching TV, have pizza for dinner over and over again and play the lottery knowing which numbers will win big! But Cory soon longs for life to move on – can he break the time loop and bring the forever weekend to a close?

You can reserve them via our online catalogue.
