Residents prepare to cast Mayoral vote

With less than one week to go until the polls open, residents across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby, and Derbyshire are gearing up to make their voice heard on Thursday 2 May in an election to appoint the very first East Midlands Mayor.

The government’s given powers over jobs, homes, transport and the environment back to the East Midlands through a new East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), and residents from all four areas get to decide which of the six candidates in the running to take on the role of Mayor will be in charge.

The new Mayor will have access to more than £4 billion in funding, bringing investment to the region for homes, skills, transport and the environment.

Residents from across the East Midlands have been sharing their thoughts on what benefits a Mayor will bring and why it’s important for local people to vote. See what Derbyshire residents had to say including, pictured clockwise from top left:

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm on Thursday 2 May. Make sure that you're:

Potholes update

If you've been out and about in Derbyshire, you might have spotted one of our jetpatchers at work on the county's roads.

Alongside our reactive and resurfacing highways teams, we’ve also got several jetpatchers out on our roads carrying out pothole repairs.

The jetpatchers started in March this year in some hotspots. They work best in reasonably dry and less windy conditions due to the way they operate: spray injecting aggregate bitumen and binder into defects after first cleaning and preparing the pothole area.

This is just one of the ways we're repairing our roads alongside pothole repairs and as much resurfacing as possible (both full roads and hotspot sections). But we know there's lots more to do so we continue to have extra repair and resurfacing teams on, and they’re out seven days a week a massive thank you to them.

Learning disability support

Do you, or anyone in your family, use the support we offer to people with learning disabilities and/or autism? We're proposing changes to the way we offer that support and we'd like your views.

We've launched a 12-week consultation on options to re-design day opportunities and short breaks provided directly by us.

We operate four day centres at Alderbrook in Chinley, Parkwood Centre in Alfreton, No Limits, Chesterfield and Outlook in Long Eaton which are used by a total of 57 people for an average of three days per week.

Short breaks are provided to 55 people at Newhall Bungalow in Swadlincote, Petersham Centre in Long Eaton, Morewood Centre in Alfreton and Victoria Street, Brimington.

The consultation will run until 17 July and anyone can take part by filling in an online questionnaire.

Disabled children's services

Do you have a disabled child in your family? If you do, you'll be interested to know that we have extended a consultation on services for disabled children and their families for a further 10 weeks.

We're looking for views on two services The Getaway short breaks service and the Outback early help services.

Several of the questions have also been amended to make them clearer. The consultation is now available and will close for comments on Sunday 30 June 2024.

We're considering either closing The Getaway building, which offers short respite breaks for children with disabilities, or reducing capacity for short breaks and using some of the space for a home for children with disabilities in our care.

The Outback provides early help services for families with disabled children. We're thinking about stopping these services, or refocusing them to prevent family breakdown so that children with disabilities don't come into our care.

Space to recover

Do you know anybody who's taking part in drug or alcohol treatment? We've received funding from Government for a new Belper-based recovery space to give people a place to get additional help and support.

Evidence shows that people who are taking part in drug and alcohol treatment are more likely to succeed if they can access support alongside treatment.

Community recovery spaces are an evidence-based and effective way of supporting individuals at all stages of their recovery journey.

These spaces act as community hubs where people in recovery can come together and support each other.

The government provided £40,000 towards the Belper pilot project, which will be delivered by The Kelsey Family Community Interest Company.

The Belper Community Recovery Space can be found in the 1924 Arcade, Belper and is open between 9.30am and 12.30pm on Mondays and Fridays, 12.30pm and 3.30pm on Wednesdays, and Saturdays between 3pm and 6pm.

It is open to anyone, but under 18s need to be accompanied by an adult.
