Childcare for two-year-olds

Do you have a two-year-old child? Could you be eligible for funded childcare?

There are now two government-funded offers for parents of two-year-olds – the existing offer of 15 hours funded childcare for families on a low income or certain benefits, and a new offer from April of 15 hours for eligible working parents.

From April, eligible working parents of two-year-olds will be able to access 15 hours of early years funding. To ensure you can access this new funding during the summer term, you have until Sunday 31 March to check your eligibility and apply.

A Safe Place is somewhere you can go if you need help, are lost or feel scared when out and about. They include libraries, shops, restaurants, pharmacies, visitor attractions, GP surgeries and more. Each venue has a sticker in their window so you can see that they are part of the scheme and know you can go in and ask for help if you need to.

Anyone over the age of 11 can apply for a keep safe card. It has space for you to write your name, the name and phone number of a family member or carer and anything else a person might need to know about you.

Buses go electric

Electric buses are heading for Derbyshire following a joint bid we made with Stagecoach to Government for funding to replace diesel models with a new, ‘clean energy’ fleet.

£5.1m has been awarded by the Government to support Stagecoach in purchasing 57 electric buses for their depot in Chesterfield – as well as vehicle charging infrastructure for the depot. This move will help to reduce the level of carbon emissions from transport in the county as well as helping to improve local air quality.

Stagecoach is also investing £25.31m towards the cost of the zero-emission fleet, which will run on 13 local bus services across Derbyshire.

The new buses will operate both in rural areas, such as the Peak District National Park, and urban town centres which can experience concerns around air quality and congestion.

Areas to be served by the new fleet include Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire.

The bid supports our Bus Service Improvement Plan, which has brought about improvements to more than 20 bus services so far, more real time information to help passengers, and offers on tickets to lower the cost of public transport for many.

The new Combined County Authority has been created after a £1.14billion devolution deal was agreed for the area.

Devolution will mean:

  • More affordable, good quality and environmentally-sustainable housing options right across the region.
  • Residents have opportunities to develop skills and build fulfilling careers.
  • Develop transport infrastructure to create the best possible transport system for residents.
  • Help us to lead the way for our region to be a leader in pioneering new forms of clean energy to help achieve net-zero goals.

Residents across the region will get to vote for who will be the new Mayor of the East Midlands on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Drive safer for longer

Are you a motorist aged 50 or over? We're offering our popular 'driving safer for longer' information sessions to Derbyshire residents.

driving safer for longer

Older motorists have a wealth of driving experience and driving offers freedom and independence, but as we get older our health and fitness, including eyesight and reaction times begin to decline.

The 'driving safer for longer' information session offers attendees a chance to update their driving knowledge. The session aims to support residents to continue driving for as long as they choose, exploring potential difficulties which may affect driving ability along with possible solutions.

Electric vehicles boost

We're one of five councils that have successfully bid for £17.6m to get more electric vehicle charge points onto our streets.

electric car vehicle charging

The cash has come from the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund, and each local authority has been allocated an individual amount from that pot. Additional private investment from chargepoint operators will enable us to achieve our chargepoint socket aspirations.

The £17.6m funding will equate to about 8,000 new charge sockets across the area and is also likely to support around 11,138 jobs in the whole electric vehicle charging supply chain.

The project is led by Nottinghamshire County Council and is in partnership with Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, Staffordshire County Council and Midlands Connect.
