Permanent fix for potholes

If you’re wondering how long our pothole repairs last, you’re not alone – it’s a question we get asked a lot.

pothole

We always look to make a permanent repair the first time around. But with the weather conditions we’ve experienced this winter creating an unprecedented amount of potholes, it’s not been possible to do this in every case – even with the extra gangs of roadworkers we’ve got working up and down the county.

That’s why we’re doing temporary safety repairs in some areas before a road, or part of it, is fully resurfaced.

And you may have already spotted areas where this is happening including:

  • Bolsover - full resurfacing work taking place in several locations in the town centre following temporary pothole repairs over the last few months.
  • Rowsley - temporary repairs carried out and resurfacing scheduled for later this month.
  • Buxton - temporary repairs on Fairfield Road with resurfacing due to take place this month and on Bath Road.

Keep an eye out for temporary signs we’re placing in some key locations to let you know permanent resurfacing works are coming.

Safe Places

A Safe Place is somewhere where people can go if they need help, are lost or feel scared when out in the community.

Venues can help with things like calling family members or the emergency services and offering a safe area for people to wait until help arrives.

More than 230 venues are already part of the scheme which we run. Venues will be given a Safe Places sticker to display and they will be listed on the Safe Places app.

Free blood pressure checks

Did you know, one in three people could have high blood pressure but not realise it?

blood pressure testing

Left untreated, high blood pressure can increase your risk of developing a number of serious long-term health conditions, including coronary heart disease.

That’s why our Live Life Better Derbyshire team are carrying out free blood pressure checks across the county over the coming months.

Since April 2023 the Live Life Better Derbyshire team has carried out 1,200 tests across the county and over 520 people were found to have high, or very high, readings. They have since been referred onto their GP or a pharmacy for further tests.

So if you are aged between 40 and 75 when why not come along and get tested for free.

Alongside the blood pressure checks, the team also offers information about our free healthy lifestyle services.

Young carers information event

Do you know or work with a young person who is a carer for a family member?

If so, please let them know about the Young Carers Action Day information event hosted by Derbyshire Carers Association.

Young Carers Action Day is an annual event organised and led by Carers Trust to raise awareness of young carers and the challenges they face as well as highlighting help and support available.

The event is being held on the day on Wednesday 13 March 2024 from 2pm to 5pm at Vision West Nottinghamshire College, Derby Road, Mansfield, NG18 5BH.

Carers and their families will be able to find out about the support available to them, meet with education providers and employers, hear from speakers and will also receive a goody bag.

Young carers are children or young people aged 5 to 17.5 years who provide care for one or more family members.

Derbyshire Carers Association supports over 6,000 adult carers and 350 young carers and delivers a wide range of services on our behalf.

Let us know what you think

Help shape the future of a Derbyshire emergency fund which supports the county’s most vulnerable residents by taking part in our consultation.

The Derbyshire Discretionary Fund (DDF) provides grants or emergency cash payments for people in urgent need of financial help following a crisis or disaster.

Following an increase in demand for the fund, we’re considering changes to ensure it can continue to support those who need help most and we’re running a public consultation to find out what residents think. Proposals include:

  • Increasing the amount payable in an emergency cash payment in line with either inflation or increases in benefit rates.
  • Developing criteria for a ‘budget brake’ in the fund – to help the council reprioritise it at times of greatest demand.
  • Limiting the maximum number of emergency cash payments to two in any twelve-month period – it currently stands at three. This would be in line with most other councils that offer this kind of support.

The consultation runs until Sunday March 17 and we’re keen to hear what people think of the proposals.

For a paper copy of the survey, or if you need it in an alternative format, please email ddf@derbyshire.gov.uk
