Youth employment support

Do you know any young people who could use some help exploring career and training options?

training interview employment

Sixteen to 24-year-olds across Derbyshire can now get support from a Youth Employment Support Hub.

They can benefit from drop-ins, appointments and online help with employment, apprenticeships, volunteering or other training. They can also get health and wellbeing support if they need it.

The first hub in Chesterfield was set up in 2022 with Government funding. It had a target to help at least 300 young people explore career and training options in its first year. This target was exceeded by over 50% as 484 youngsters benefited.

This success has led to the county council establishing a second Hub in Ilkeston at the Cotmanhay and Ilkeston Adult Community Education Centre on Bennerley Avenue for appointments and drop-ins Monday to Wednesday. A service is also offered in Ilkeston library on Market Street on Thursdays by appointment only.

Derbyshire youngsters not local to either of the hubs can go online for help.

School meal quality maintained

We all know a nutritious meal can help boost a child's ability to learn so, if you're a parent, you'll be glad to hear that despite the soaring costs of food and staffing, our school pupils will continue to receive hot and healthy meals of the same quality and size.

school dinner school lunch healthy

Like other councils across the country, our school catering service has been significantly affected by inflation and other factors driving up the cost of food and staffing.

Due to statutory changes to wages, staffing costs for the service increased by more than £1.2million in April 2022.

While our service has worked incredibly hard to keep costs low and not compromise on meal size or quality, prices will increase from the start of the September term.

Prices will increase from September 2023 on the primary paid meal charge to parents and carers by 95p to £3.25. There is more meal choice in secondary schools, but prices will increase by a comparable amount.

The increase will not affect families of Key Stage One pupils, who receive free school meals under the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme or families of primary or secondary pupils who are eligible for benefit-related free school meals.

Our school catering service currently provides more than 60,000 hot meals to children at 358 schools across Derbyshire every day and the increase will solely be used to cover costs as the service is not legally allowed to make a profit.
