New future for County Hall?

We’re seeking ideas for alternative uses for County Hall in Matlock so that we can make the most of the historic building and bring a new lease of life to the town and the surrounding area.

As part of our County Hall options project, we’ve asked a team of advisors to seek expressions of interest from developers, hotel operators and others for their ideas for the future of the historic complex of buildings.

Our vision for County Hall involves transforming the current buildings, and the fabulous landscaped setting into a world class hotel and venue with spaces for local businesses, new homes for local people, a revitalised Winter Garden, and opportunities for the community to hold events, while maintaining office space for colleagues on the site.

We are in the very early stages of exploring the possibilities and before any decisions are made on the future of County Hall, a full consultation will be held and any potential changes will also need planning approval.

More information is available on the consultant's website with several artist's impressions showing what spaces at County Hall could look like, including the Winter Garden and the Members' Room.

We’ll keep you updated with any further developments and in the meantime, work is still being undertaken to understand the current use of the County Hall buildings and what we might do with them in the medium-term.

Bus boost

If you live near or travel around Ilkeston and Sawley you could benefit from improvements to bus services in the area.

my15 bus

The ilkeston flyer and my15 services are being boosted by investment from the county council and the government.

As a result, the number of buses available in the evenings and on Sundays will increase from 25 June. Both services are run by trentbarton.

The changes will make it easier to access the leisure, employment and education opportunities in the area and are thanks to our wider £47m Bus Service Improvement Plan for Derbyshire.

Our commitment to museum service

You've probably heard that our museum and art gallery in Buxton has closed temporarily. Now the Leader of Derbyshire County Council has stressed our 'absolute commitment' to securing the future of the service.

The move followed the discovery of dry rot in structural timbers and floor joists. Further investigations can't be carried out with the building open.

While no timescale has been put on investigation and remedial work, it is likely to take some time to complete, and alternative ways to deliver the service are currently being explored while the work is carried out.

Councillor Barry Lewis said we'll do all we can to protect this 'valuable asset'.

You can still go online and visit the collections, virtual exhibitions and blog. You can also follow the museum on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for updates.

Million Trees reaches first milestone

million trees

Our project to support the planting of a million trees across Derbyshire by 2030 has reached its first milestone with more than 100,000 trees now recorded on our website.

Anyone who has planted trees anywhere in the county since June 2021 can count them towards our total by adding them to our online map.

We’re looking ahead to this year’s planting season, which starts in October, to plant more trees across our own estate.

And we’re encouraging residents, businesses and landowners to plant more too. If you want to be kept up-to-date about the latest developments for this project then register your details
