Adult Community Education
Upskilling for a changing job market
The last two years have been challenging years for many people. If you are looking for work but struggling to get a new job, maybe now is the time to look at your qualifications and skills. Think about what you can do to boost your chances in a competitive and rapidly changing job market.
Maths and English Qualifications
Most employers look for a Functional Skills Level 2 / GCSE grade 4/C in each subject, so English and maths skills are important. We offer English and maths qualifications from beginners to GCSE; all are fully funded and FREE. This year, most of our courses are available to study online or face-to-face classes.
Essential Digital Skills
Now more than ever, being confident using a computer to create documents, research information, and communicate by email and video conferencing are essential skills. Most employers now expect people to have digital skills.
Do you need to develop your digital skills and knowledge? Whether you are new to computers or have a bit more confidence, we can help. Our Essential Digital Skills course offers you the opportunity to take a digital skills qualification at either Beginners Entry level or Level 1. All qualifications are fully funded and FREE.
Book a ‘Making Choices’ session with us to find the right course for you
If you are not sure what qualifications you need or what your level in maths and English is, our FREE Making Choices sessions will help you to:
- choose what course is suitable for you
- find out your current level of skills in English, maths and digital skills
- set your own learning plan
Contact your local Adult Education centre to find out more information or email making.choices@daces.derbyshire.gov.uk

New Adult Fiction Books Coming in November
There are plenty of new adult fiction titles to choose from in November. You can reserve them via our online catalogue.
Here are three titles that we think you will enjoy:
Our first choice is ‘The Buried' by Sharon Bolton. The long awaited follow up to ‘The Craftsman,’ this book sees senior police officer Florence Lovelady return to Sabden to honour a promise made to dying Larry Glassbrook, a serial killer she put away for murder. Following her father Larry's death, Cassie Glassbrook feels free to come home and win back the love of her childhood sweetheart. She'll stop at nothing to get him back. As the two women return to the town that nearly took their lives 30 years ago, long-buried secrets are unearthed that could destroy them all.
Secondly, we’ve chosen ‘Bournville’ by Jonathan Coe. This book, centred on Bournville, a placid suburb of Birmingham, and site of a famous chocolate factory, follows Mary and her family across the generations. ‘As we travel through 75 years of social change…… one pressing question starts to emerge: will these changing times bring Mary's family - and their country - closer together, or leave them more adrift and divided than ever before?’
In our third choice, ‘Dawnlands’ by Philippa Gregory, we go back in time. It is 1685, England is on the brink of a renewed civil war against the Stuart kings and many families are bitterly divided. Ned Ferryman, his sister Alinor and their family get embroiled with the politics of the time and facing execution and deportation find themselves enmeshed in the creation of an imposter Prince of Wales – a surrogate baby to the Queen.
As a bonus, we are including two titles of local interest:
‘The Mitford Secret: Deborah Mitford and the Chatsworth Mystery’ by Jessica Fellowes. It's 1941, and the Mitford household is splintered by the vicissitudes of war. To bring the clan together - maybe for one last time - Deborah invites them to Chatsworth for Christmas, along with a selection of society's most impressive and glamorous guests, as well as old family friend Louisa Cannon, a private detective. One night, a psychic arrives, and to liven things up Deborah agrees she may host a seance. But entertainment turns to dark mystery as the psychic reveals that a maid was murdered in this very same house - and she can prove it. Louisa steps forward to try to solve the cold case. But with a house full of people who want nothing more than to bury their secrets, will she be able to unmask the murderer? And how deep does the truth lie?
Our final choice for this month is ‘Coming home to Mistletoe Cottage’ by local author Celia Anderson. ‘Amid the salt marshes and rolling fields of Periwinkle Bay, Magda Conway is enjoying her retirement in ivy-clad Mistletoe Cottage. Yet with three weeks to go until Christmas, as the fairy lights twinkle and the trees go up around the village, her peace is disrupted when she's left in sole charge of her two mischievous grandchildren. Before long, she's at her wit's end - but high on a kitchen shelf lies her mother's handwritten recipe book. And as she turns to it for advice, she finds more than just recipes between its tattered covers: there's a pinch of magic too, and maybe even a sprinkling of love.’
You can request any of these titles at your local library or place a hold yourself via our online catalogue

This Month We Recommend You Read...
One of our favourite things to do is recommend amazing books to you! This month we recommend you check out these titles:
Explorers at Stardust City - Alex Bell
The latest in the Explorer's Club Series. Directly below was a sight none of them had ever seen before - a kind of spiral, with glowing ruby-red lights that curved outwards like tentacles. In the middle was a dark circle, inky black. It had the look of a really, really deep well. Ursula and her friends are in a race against time. The Collector has taken Stella captive, and is hungrily snatching up all the beautiful places of the world in her snow globe prisons. She needs to be stopped, but first they must find her. To aid them in their quest, the explorers seek help from new allies, including a Pirate Queen, with a ghost ship that can defy time and space, and then take to the skies in a galaxy fairy rocket. But their journey is fraught with danger, as the future of the planet hangs in the balance.
Mountainfell - Katharine Orton
Eleven-year-old Erskin is used to danger; she lives in the shadow of Mountainfell, a place of wild creatures and dangerous magic. When the most powerful and deadly creature of all - the fearsome cloud dragon - snatches Erskin's sister away, Erskin must face her greatest fear and journey onto the mountain to bring her back. A terrible power is stirring, and it is up to Erskin to save both her family and her home.
The Moon: Discover the Mysteries of Earth's Closest Neighbour - Sanyln Buxner
This guide to the Moon takes 7 to 9 year olds through its past, present, and future through illustrations, photographs, and fascinating information. An introduction for young readers who want to learn about Earth's closest neighbour, this book covers the entire subject in thrilling detail. Featuring breakdowns of the Moon's formation and geography, the lunar phases, a history of NASA's Apollo missions, the Moon's effect on Earth's tides and nocturnal animals, recent scientific discoveries, and so much more.
Order your copies of these fantastic books on our online catalogue.
