More than 700 trees will be planted in Derbyshire this winter thanks to funding provided by the Forestry Commission.
Working with Amber Valley Borough Council, Peak District National Park Authority, North East Derbyshire District Council, and parish councils in Pilsley, Etwall and Pinxton, we bid for £225,000 from the Forestry Commission’s Local Authority Treescape Fund (LATF).
The grant will pay for 765 trees, aged between five and 10 years old, which will be planted in these areas, and maintenance costs for three years.
They will be native tree species such as oak, beech, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn, hornbeam, willow, and rowan. Planting will take place during winter 2022 to 2023.
If you get a text message asking you to click on a link to claim your energy bill discount from the government, don't – it's a scam.
Action Fraud, the national fraud and cyber fraud crime reporting centre, is warning about fake text messages pretending to be from the government.
The texts say that the recipient is “owed” or “eligible” for an energy bill discount as part of the Energy Bill Support Scheme. The links in the emails lead to genuine-looking websites that are designed to steal your personal and financial information.
You don't need to apply for the discount. It happens automatically, and you won't be asked to provide your bank details.
If you get a suspicious text message forward it to 7726. Your phone provider can then investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.

Could you offer a home to refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine?
Derbyshire resettlement partnership is seeking more hosts to support the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
New hosts are being sought for a range of reasons including to help support Ukrainian guests whose original accommodation hasn’t worked out, or where their original hosts have had changes to their personal circumstances meaning they are unable to continue to offer the use of their home. Also, as more visa applications are approved with arrivals looking to make Derbyshire their temporary home, further hosts are needed to help meet demand.
You'd need to be able to offer accommodation for a minimum of six months, and you'll be offered a £350 per month ‘thank you’ payment.

If your trusty hairdryer or kettle breaks, before you chuck it in the bin and buy a new one, why not take it to a repair café?
There are now 14 repair cafés operating across the county.
The latest additions are in Derby, Stanley Village near Ilkeston and Woodville. All of them helping to cut waste, build repair skills and save money.
Not only can you have a cuppa while someone looks at your stuff, repair cafés are community events as well, with book sales, plant swaps and other activities going on.
Items the repairers tackle can include small electricals, clothes, garden tools, bikes, computers, hand tools and small items of furniture can also be considered for repair.
Goods that are beyond repair can be taken to our household waste recycling centres.

Fancy winning a family ticket to one of our fantastic Shine A Light events which are back for a second year from this month?
Shine A Light is a fabulous night-time attraction celebrating the county’s rich heritage by lighting up four Derbyshire landmarks using large-scale projections.
And this year it’s bigger and better than ever with displays at four iconic venues, kicking off at Cromford Mills, home of Sir Richard Arkwright’s first mill complex, in the UNESCO Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, on 27th & 28th October 2022, followed by our very own Elvaston Castle Country Park on 19th & Sunday 20th November 2022.
Next the awe-inspiring animations move to Barrow Hill Roundhouse, the UK’s last surviving railway roundhouse near Chesterfield, on 8 and 9 December 2022 and finally Bess of Hardwick’s Elizabethan country house Hardwick Hall, near Chesterfield, on 17 and 18 February 2023.
Providing fun and entertainment for all the family, we commissioned the one-of-a-kind experiences from Derbyshire-born duo Illuminos to celebrate Derbyshire’s history while boosting the visitor economy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The projections are unique to each venue and visitors who watch all four displays – and successfully spot the ‘hidden animal’ at each – will have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win a hamper of local produce.
Tickets are £9 for adults, £6 for children aged 4-16 and FREE for children aged 3 and under.
Win tickets!
For each venue, one family ticket (2 adults + 3 children) is up for grabs. For your chance to see Derbyshire’s heritage and history of innovation brought to life please answer this question:
How many days will Shine A Light appear at each venue?
The closing date is midday on Monday 24 October. Good luck!
Normal terms and conditions apply.
