Ready for winter

When it snows, make sure you're in the know.

gritter

Sign up for our snow updates to make sure you get the latest information about affected services or road closures when bad weather hits.

Our team of gritters are on standby to help keep Derbyshire’s roads clear of ice and snow when needed, with 35 gritting lorries – which can all be fitted with ploughs – now stationed at five highways depots around the county.

Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for details of when our gritters are due to go out and find out where they have been using our interactive gritting map.

We've stockpiled around 25,000 tonnes of grit for the winter season and parish and town councils have been filling their 1,250 grit bins for local residents to spread salt on pavements in their local communities. We also provide 803 grit bins across the county.

Do you keep birds?

If you have chickens or any other captive birds you'll want to keep them safe from bird flu.

The risk of migratory wild birds infecting domestic birds with avian flu rises as winter approaches, so you'll want to be extra-vigilant in caring for them by sticking to strict biosecurity standards.

Queen's Green Canopy

Derbyshire's been gifted with six trees from the Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Tree of Trees’.

The Queen’s Green Canopy, a nationwide tree-planting initiative launched by Her Majesty to mark her Platinum Jubilee, made the announcement at a ceremony held on Monday (3 October) in London.

The six Derbyshire recipients are among more than 300 organisations set to receive, or have dedicated in their name, one of the trees from the ‘Tree of Trees’, which stood in front of Buckingham Palace at the height of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London in June.

The Derbyshire recipients who will have a tree dedicated to them are:

  • Alfreton Park School, Alfreton
  • Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, Buxton
  • Derbyshire Children’s Homes
  • Derbyshire Federation of Women’s Institutes, Derby
  • Landmarks College, Eckington
  • The Royal School for the Deaf, Derby.

The hornbeam trees will be planted at an event at Shipley Country Park later this month and will form a coppice, to be called The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Coppice, Derbyshire, in memory of Her Majesty.

The six trees were secured for the county by the Derbyshire Lieutenancy which is also funding a seventh tree, a copper beech, to sit in the centre of the new coppice – so there will be a tree to represent each decade of Her Majesty’s historic 70-year reign.
