Suicide prevention is everyone's business but it can feel hard to know how to help or what to say.

Below is some advice about how to have a conversation with someone who is in mental distress.

  • Listen carefully and without judgement
  • Try not to offer opinions or advice
  • Do not be afraid to ask 'are you having suicidal thoughts?'
  • If they are in crisis then call 999 or encourage them to visit A and E
