Early Years Newsletter, The Education Improvement Service, Derbyshire County Council

July 2022

Dear Colleagues

As we head into the summer, we hope you have an opportunity to reflect on all of your achievements and successes throughout this academic year. We thank you for your ongoing commitment to children and their families in Derbyshire.

We would like to congratulate all of the schools and settings that have successfully completed the Early Years Professional Development Programme (EYPDP) and achieved the Early Years Communication Friendly Setting Award this summer term.

Looking forward to the autumn we will be building on the success of the EYPDP with the launch of Confident Communicators.

We are delighted to be working with partners to share with you information regarding the new funded early years leadership qualifications.

We know that for many of you your provision will continue to support children and families throughout the summer, however we hope you all have an opportunity to rest and recharge ready for a busy and exciting autumn term.

Best wishes on behalf of the Early Years Team

Sarah Bryan - Senior Adviser for School Improvement (Early Years)

Rhiannon Kennion - Early Years Manager

Amanda Gordon - Early Years Sufficiency Manager

Confident Communicators

Confident Communicators logo

Confident Communicators in Derbyshire will build on the strong legacies of Every Child a Talker (ECaT) and Early Years Professional Development Programme (EYPDP).

This project is significantly funded by Derbyshire County Council’s Levelling Up Fund.

Starting from Autumn 2022 there will be training & development packages for settings and schools which aim to:
• Increase confidence and competence of adults to support children becoming confident communicators.
• Improve outcomes and secure foundations for later learning.
• Create consistency of approach across the EYFS (0-5yrs).
• Enhance and sustain change through communities of practice and peer networking.

There are two packages; accredited and non-accredited.

Confident Communicators - Accredited Package

  • Leadership conversation(s)
  • OCN accredited ELKLAN 'Speech and language support' Level 3 training leading to Level 4 training and achieving the Early Years 'Communication Friendly Setting' Award (CFSe) .
  • Package of CPD over 12-18 months with the first term top-loaded for the Level 3 training, e.g. equivalent of half a day per week for 10 weeks.
  • Possibility to fast track to the CFSe if there are ELKLAN level 3 staff in the school/setting and ready to step up to lead the team through CFSe, i.e. a set programme of learning and coaching called ‘Communication counts’.

Access to this Accredited Package would normally cost a school or setting approx. £2,000 but your contribution would be £250 for the full accredited package.

Confident Communicators – Non-accredited package

  • Leadership conversation(s)
  • A series of CPD for several staff focused on upskilling staff in early language development, including intervention principles and ways to manage communication and language challenges below specialist thresholds. These will develop vocabulary and the early stages of reading, leading to confident readers.

Access to this package would normally cost a school or setting approx. £1,150 but your  contribution would be £150 for the full, non-accredited package.

More Affordable Childcare

Have you seen the Government have announced a drive to reduce the cost of childcare for parents?

The announcement includes a new campaign to encourage take-up of Tax-Free Childcare and the Universal Credit Childcare offer. Find resources to use in your settings and share with parents in this communications toolkit.

In addition, take a look at the Derbyshire Entitlements video which outlines why you should be promoting early years entitlement for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds.

How will you make sure that parents and carers are aware of their entitlement to free childcare places for their 2,3-,and 4-year-olds?

Provider Survey

Winner

A huge thank you to everyone who completed and submitted our Early Years Provider Survey, we had a fantastic response!

Your feedback will help us to understand the impact of the pandemic on Derbyshire’s early years and childcare market from a provider perspective. The data from this survey will provide valuable information on the sector and contribute to shaping our priorities. We hope to be able to share some of the headlines with you in the autumn term.

Congratulations to Ashover Primary School who were randomly selected as winners of our prize draw to win a one-day ticket to the Derbyshire EYFS Conference 2022.

Staff from Ashover Primary attended the Thursday sessions focussing on well-being, with keynote guest speaker Suzanne Zeedyk and a webinar from Derbyshire’s Early Years SEN Team introducing the revised local area approach to meeting sensory processing needs.
