Summer Reading Challenge

Are you looking for something to entertain your children this summer? Then look no further than the Gadgeteers, Summer Reading Challenge 2022, taking place in our libraries this summer! The goal is for your child to read six library books over the course of the summer holidays, with stickers along the way and a medal & certificate for those that manage to finish. The theme of 'Gadgeteers' is all about STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths), so look out for events along this theme in our libraries all summer-long. It's free to sign up to our libraries, so why not take yourself along to your local library to get library cards for the family, or join online today?

Libraries Customer Satisfaction Survey

We want your views on the services we offer

We are running a Derbyshire libraries customer satisfaction survey in July – you can complete it online by visiting here.

It should only take a couple of minutes of your time to fill it in and the results will be published later in the year. There are also paper-based versions in libraries if you prefer.  Thank you for taking part!

Catalogue photo

Derbyshire Record Office

A few weeks ago our online catalogue had a face-lift, vastly modernising and improving not just the way it looks, but also the way you can find information. The catalogue allows you to search through more than 8000 archive collections and we’ve been adding a lot of the books from the Local Studies Library as well (but there are so many, it will take another 8 years before they’re all included!).

The first of our guides on how to use the catalogue is now on our blog – it explains how an archive catalogue works and describes some basic ways to search for information. Why not have a go: just put a word in the ‘Quick Search’ box (e.g. Ilkeston, mining or dance) and see what you can discover!

Adult fiction titles recommendations

New Adult Fiction Books Coming in July

There are plenty of new adult fiction titles to choose from in July.  You can reserve them via our online catalogue. We’ve highlighted three titles we hope you’ll enjoy:

The house of fortune by Jessie Burton

Did you enjoy reading, The Miniaturist? Jessie Burton has now written a sequel. 'The House of Fortune' returns us to the mysterious Brandt family in Amsterdam in 1705 for a story of fate and ambition, secrets and dreams, and one young woman's determination to rule her own destiny.’

The Museum of Ordinary people by Mike Gayle

‘Inspired by a box of mementos found abandoned in a skip following a house clearance, The Museum of Ordinary People is a poignant, thought-provoking but ultimately uplifting story of memory and love, grief, loss and the things we leave behind.’

Other People’s Husbands by Elizabeth Noble

‘What are the things you know about people when you've been friends for twenty years? A group of close friends, their bonds forged at the nursery gates two decades ago, have celebrated, commiserated and grown together - they thought they all knew each other so well. Until the affair. Now a crack appears in everything. Could one betrayal really destroy it all?’

Here are some relaxing reads to take on your holidays:

The reading list by Sara Nisha Adams

Another life by Jodie Chapman

Time after time by Louise Pentland

Waiting for sunshine by Jane Sanderson

All about Evie by Matson Taylor

I’m sorry you feel that way by Rebecca Wait

You can request any of these titles at your local library or place a hold yourself via our online catalogue

Book covers, children's titles

This Month We Recommend You Read...

There are so many books we could recommend to you and your children. This month, as we see the start of the Summer Reading Challenge, we are recommending that you join the Gadgeteers and check out these titles!

Perfectly weird, perfectly you - Camilla Pang

Diagnosed with autism age 8, Camilla saw the world very differently. But with science as her sidekick, she was able to translate ideas she could understand (like gravity, photosynthesis and algorithms) onto things she couldn’t (like peer pressure, emotions and finding your voice). Today, Camilla is a scientist and an award-winning author, and she is here to share her scientific survival guide with you – so you can grow up with the courage to be yourself, no matter how different you feel or how tricky you might find it to connect. A great middle grade read!

Yasmin the Scientist - Saadia Faruqi and Hatem Aly

Everyone seems to have an idea for the science fair except for Yasmin! After some failed experiments, Yasmin’s snack break with Nani inspires an idea. Together they use kitchen science for sweet success. Want to be a scientist? Look around, and everything has science in it! Yasmin learns of a science experiment by accident and is marvelled by it. Perfect for budding scientist and readers!

Once upon a big idea: the story of inventions - James Carter and Margaux Carpentier

From bridges and boats to medicines and mobile phones, this book takes readers on a journey of discovery through all the amazing inventions human beings have come up with. Learn how rocks and stones helped create the pyramids and how modern materials such as concrete and nylon have changed our lives. A perfect picture book to share at home.
