Please help us recycle by pre-sorting

It's a strange thing but since the pandemic started, we're finding that fewer people are pre-sorting the waste they bring to our household waste recycling centres.

HWRC

Please can you help us recycle what can be recycled by separating the waste out into its different types and then putting it in the right container.

Why not take a couple of minutes to watch our video on pre-sorting rubbish and why it's so important.

Our contractors are intercepting recyclable waste where they can but it would be great if you could help by doing it before you arrive. Thank you.

Pensioners are missing out

Are you a pensioner? Or do you know someone who is?

Pension credit

Thousands of Derbyshire pensioners are missing out on hundreds of pounds a year by not claiming Pension Credit.

It's estimated that around 17,000 Derbyshire pensioners are entitled to, but not claiming, the pension top-up, with the take-up rate for those aged over 75 at only 60%.

Claiming now could also make you eligible for government help with the cost of living – worth up to £650. Claim before 25 August 2022.

Please spread the word and urge people to find out if they qualify

We're resurfacing pavements

We're part-way through a £58m investment in our roads and pavements, that's scheduled to carry on until March 2023.

pavement

Our highways team will be improving pavements across the county over the coming year. You can find a full list of the pavements to be resurfaced on our website.

Yellow advance warning signs will be put up before each job is started to let local people know about the work, although all jobs can be delayed if it rains. Roads are not normally closed to do these jobs so there should be minimal disruption. The highways team will do their best to ensure that access to properties is maintained.

Scams Awareness Fortnight

Our trading standards team is backing a Citizens Advice campaign to help people recognise scams and prevent them from becoming a victim.

scam

Anyone can be a victim of a scam, no matter how savvy they think they are.

One of the key messages this year is that with many people facing increased financial pressures, there is a good chance that scammers will take advantage of this.

For example, Citizens Advice have already seen
instances of scammers pretending to be energy companies offering “too good to be
true” deals and others sending out phishing emails offering fake government
rebates.

So be #ScamAware and help your loved ones to be safe too.

Learning disabilities consultation

Do you have a view on the future of our learning disabilities day services?

To take part in the consultation which runs until 19 June 2022 people can fill in an online questionnaire.

The two options are moving away from traditional building-based day services in favour of offering alternative opportunities, or continue to run 12 day centres.

Greener buying decisions planned

We're using our buying power to help tackle climate change by making greener decisions about what we buy.

We spend more than £450m a year on goods and services ranging from materials used for fixing roads to food served in schools, books for libraries and waste and recycling services.

Now, as part of our climate change strategy and commitment to cut carbon emissions to net zero, environmental requirements will be included in all contracts.
