Lighting a beacon for HM the Queen

Queen Elizabeth II official platinum jubilee pic

More than 2,000 beacons are being lit across the UK and Commonwealth at the same time on Thursday 2 June at 9.45pm as part of a four-day celebration of the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Several public and private beacon events are being held across Derbyshire, with our beacon being lit at Solomon’s Temple at Grin Low in Buxton.

Our Civic Chairman Councillor David Wilson will be joined at our beacon lighting by Derbyshire Vice Lord Lieutenant Colonel John Wilson OBE DL, the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, who is lighting the beacon as the Queen's representative, Michael Copestake, and the Bishop of Derby, the Right Reverend Libby Lane, aided by our countryside service staff.

While the area directly around the beacon will be cordoned off for beacon-lighting guests only, you'll be able to see the beacon from the surrounding country park and from further afield, weather permitting.

Right Royal Stories storytelling events are taking place in five of our libraries throughout June.

And there's a touring Jubilee memorabilia exhibition that's visiting 11 branches until October.

Other events have included designing a celebratory flag, fancy dress, coffee mornings, rhyme times, garden parties and crafts.

And Derbyshire Record Office is offering a chance for everyone to contribute memories of royal occasions and celebrations to be included in the archives. Post a memory in the collection box at your local library or use our online form to share your royal memories.
