Free Easter holiday activities for kids

School-age children living in Derbyshire who receive benefit-related free school meals can take part in free Easter holiday activities.

easter holiday activities

There’s no need for children to be bored during the Easter holidays with a huge range of free, fun activities on offer at community centres, village halls and schools across the county.

More than 26,000 free places are on offer at 95 venues, as part of the spring holiday activity and food programme developed by us and supported by the Department for Education.

Places are free for families who claim benefit-related free school meals and include breakfast or lunch. Prices may vary per activity for other applicants and are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those on free school meals.

The activities are for children aged five to 16.

If you, or someone you know, is looking for a job, change of career or have retired early but would like to try something new, check out a new website promoting careers in care across Derbyshire and Derby.

caring career care work

Jobs in both the NHS and in the social care sector, including with us, have been brought together on one website to give residents easy access to all care jobs locally including work in hospitals, care homes or in the community.

Created by Joined Up Careers Derbyshire, which brings together health and care organisations across the city and county, the website is part of the Your Caring Career campaign designed to help recruit essential health and care staff.

Your say on e-bike hire in the High Peak

Residents and visitors are being invited to have their say on e-bike hire in the High Peak as part of plans to improve facilities across Derbyshire.

Have your say and be in with a chance of winning a £50 shopping voucher. The closing date is Friday 6 May 2022.

The project is part of our pledge to reduce the emissions it generates to net-zero by 2032 or sooner and help the rest of Derbyshire reduce carbon emissions generated within the county to net zero by 2050 or sooner.

If you have unloved items in your wardrobe, books that you’ll probably never read or accessories that you’ve rarely worn here’s your chance to exchange them for something you prefer in the ‘Big Exchange’. If you have nothing to swap you can still buy a £1 token in aid of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and exchange it for something that takes your fancy. There will be bargains to be had.

As well as the Big Exchange there are free workshops including willow hoop weaving, making fabric food wraps and getting creative with wooden pallets. Families can make seed bombs or a bug hotel to help make their gardens more wildlife friendly. Workshops need to be prebooked.

Grants for Platinum Jubilee celebrations

If you're in a community group organising events or activities to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year, funding is available to help you.

Queen Elizabeth II official platinum jubilee pic

All 64 of our councillors have been given an extra pot of money to help local groups in their area mark the Platinum Jubilee and people are being encouraged to get their applications in now.

Every year each county councillor receives £3,860, called the Members Community Leadership Scheme, which local groups can apply for to go towards community causes, and this year an additional £1,500 Platinum Fund has been added which is available now.

Groups seeking funding should contact their local county councillor explaining the nature of their project, activity or event, the amount needed, what other funding may be available and how it will benefit the community.

Libraries want your Jubilee memories

Derbyshire libraries are creating an archive of memories of the Queen, in order to celebrate Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee.

We'd love to hear all stories and memories of the Queen. These can be memories of Jubilee celebrations in the past, seeing or meeting the Queen in Derbyshire or even watching celebrations on television.

There are two ways to contribute if you have a memory to share. You can visit your local library, write your memory on a card and hand it to library staff. Or you can submit your memory online.

You can get a discounted compost bin

Do you already have, or are you hoping to have, green fingers?

compost bin

Either way compost is at the heart of any gardening. The good news is that we’ve recently renewed our home composting scheme. This offers discounted prices for Derbyshire residents on the purchase of compost bins, including a buy-one-get-one-half-price offer on the traditional-style composters

And Derbyshire schools are eligible for two free compost bins from us, proving they haven’t already claimed them in recent years. Enquiries about these should go to our waste management team wastemanagement@derbyshire.gov.uk
