Don’t miss out on funded childcare

Working families with three and four-year-olds could be entitled to 30 hours' funded childcare per week. Find out if you’re eligible and apply before 31 March to get your code in time for the April term.

30 hours funded childcare

There are lots of benefits of early education for you and your child. It can help children to grow, develop and learn. Your child will make new friends, develop their language, imagination, confidence and creativity which will help them towards starting school.

If you already have your code to apply for 30 hours of funded childcare, remember to reconfirm your eligibility approximately every three months. If you apply more than three months before the term starts, you’ll have to reconfirm your eligibility in your account to keep your code valid.

Have your say on proposed new road

Do you live in, work, or visit Chesterfield? We’d like to know what you think to our proposals to build a new road linking Chesterfield and Staveley.

Have your say

The project is designed to cut the amount of traffic using the A619 through Brimington, Hollingwood and Staveley, reducing issues with traffic delays and queuing, HGVs passing residential property, and improving noise and air quality.

The new route is proposed to stretch 3.7 miles from the roundabout by Sainsbury’s on the A619 in Chesterfield to Hall Lane in Staveley and will open up land for employment and housing.

The closing date for comments is Friday 10 April 2022.

Bird flu outbreak

We’re warning residents about an outbreak of bird flu at Straw’s Bridge nature reserve, known locally as Swan Lake, in West Hallam.

While it's hoped the outbreak will be confined to wild birds on the Straw’s Bridge site, we're taking the precautionary measure of putting signs up at all of our countryside sites close to the nature reserve to urge people to take steps to help stop the disease spreading. These sites are:

  • Kirk Hallam Lake, Godfrey Drive, Kirk Hallam
  • Pewit Carr Local Nature Reserve
  • Mapperley Reservoir, Shipley Country Park
  • Osborne’s Pond, Shipley Country Park
  • Adam’s Pond, Shipley Country Park
  • Shipley Lake
  • Manner Floods.

If you plan to visit any of the sites please keep to footpaths, keep dogs on leads and do not feed wild birds.

Please also avoid picking up or touching dead or sick wild birds or touching feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings.

People who keep poultry or other birds are also being urged to thoroughly wash their hands and disinfect footwear after visiting the affected site before tending to their own birds or flocks.

Are you up to date with your Covid-19 vaccines?

It's not too late to get your first, second or booster jab. You can pop into a walk-in clinic or book your appointment in advance online.

You can help stop the spread by keeping rooms well ventilated if you're meeting other people indoors, wearing a face covering in crowded places and washing your hands regularly.

Queen’s Green Canopy support

Queen’s Green Canopy tree-planting initiative

Our councillors have been showing support for the Queen’s Green Canopy tree-planting initiative – launched to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee – by getting busy with their spades across the county.

Civic Chairman Councillor Jean Wharmby has already planted trees near the Sett Valley Trail in Hayfield and at Bluebank Pools nature reserve in Chesterfield.

And Civic Vice Chairman Councillor David Wilson has also been busy, planting a tree at Tibshelf Common on the Five Pits Trail.

Elvaston Castle Country Park also got a new monkey puzzle tree, planted by Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Safeguarding Councillor Julie Patten, pictured far left, with acting assistant area manager Kate Divey-Matthews, centre, and acting assistant countryside service manager Gill Forrester.
