The Derbyshire Open Art Competition is Back!

Since 1982, the Derbyshire Open Art Competition has attracted amateur and professional artists of all ages and backgrounds to compete for a range of prizes including a place in the museum collection. Now in its 38th year, entrants are once again encouraged to take inspiration from our very own county and create a piece that celebrates Derbyshire. From landscapes, streetscapes and townscapes, to still life, local portraiture and representations of local stories, we're looking forward to seeing a diverse range of submissions. Most mediums are accepted, including oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawing, print, collage, manipulated digital imagery and 3-dimensional work.

The museum will be accepting entries for the competition on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 June 2022, from 10.30am to 4pm. Artists can enter up to 2 works which must be handed in at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. If you would like to see the results for yourself and see if you agree with the judges, the exhibition is on show from Saturday 25 June to Friday 2 September. Admission is free and many of the artworks are for sale.

New Adult Books Coming in April

There are plenty of new adult titles to choose from in April. You can reserve them via our online catalogue. Here are three picks to keep you engrossed:

Candice Carty-Williams’ debut novel was award-winning ‘Queenie’.  ‘People Person’ is her latest title. “Dimple Pennington knew of her half siblings, but she didn't really know them. Five people who don't have anything in common except for faint memories of being driven through Brixton in their dad's gold jeep, and some pretty complex abandonment issues. Dimple has bigger things to think about. She's thirty, and her life isn't really going anywhere ….. until a dramatic event brings her half siblings crashing back into her life”.

‘Little Sister’ is Gytha Lodge’s fourth outing for detective Jonah Sheens. Jonah is having a relaxing time until he sees a teenage girl coming out of the woods covered in blood. She says she’s ok, that it’s her sister he needs to worry about. He learns that the two girls are runaways from a children’s home.  Keely knows where her sister is but won’t say.  She wants his attention; he wants to save her sister.

Finally, ‘The No Show’ is the latest offering from Beth O’Leary. It’s Valentine’s Day and three women are unknowingly waiting for the same man. He’s promised to meet each one, but he doesn’t show up to any. Meet Joseph Carter. That is, if you can find him.

Covers of recommended books

This Month We Recommend You Read...

There are some excellent new books coming out in April for children, which you can reserve on our online library catalogue right now. Here's three to look forward to:

First off, for junior readers, it's The Girl Who Lost a Leopard by Nizrana Farook. Selvi is a wild child who loves climbing in the beautiful mountains behind her home. She is often joined by Lokka, a leopard with a beautiful coat and huge golden eyes. When hunters come for Lokka, Selvi is determined to fight. But what can she do against such powerful enemies? Turn to her friends, of course! Now they just need the perfect plan.

Our second pick is Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick, author of the brilliant Crater Lake series. When classmates Hallie, Angelo, Gustav and Naira are forced to come to school on a Saturday, they think things can't get much worse. But they're wrong. Things are about to get seriously scary. What has dragged their teacher underground? Why do the creepy caretakers keeping humming the tune to Itsy Bitsy Spider? And what horrors lurk in the shadows, getting stronger and meaner every minute? Cut off from help and in danger each time they touch the ground, the gang's only hope is to work together.

Our non-fiction choice today is The Greatest Show on Earth by the entertaining Mini Grey. Take your seats for the ENTIRE history of Planet Earth, as we take a whistle-stop tour from the birth of Earth, to the age of bacteria, the era of dinosaurs to the moment of people (blink and you'll miss it). Narrated by a friendly troop of insects and with mind-blowing, lively illustrations, this illustrated book will entertain and educate, as we put on a show, the greatest show, the show of the evolution of life on Earth.

Need a further suggestion? We're always delighted to suggest a story! Contact us on Facebook, Twitter, or ask.library@derbyshire.gov.uk and we'll do our best to find you something fantastic!
