It's Time to Talk about mental health

If you run a Derbyshire group that works with children, young people or men then you may be interested in signing up to a new mental health and suicide prevention awareness project.

time to talk Derbyshire

The Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Awareness Project is led by Erewash Voluntary Action and we’re funding the project on behalf of Joined Up Care Derbyshire.

The project will work with local organisations who have regular contact with the target audience including businesses, independent gyms and football clubs.

Groups will be offered free mental health awareness and suicide prevention training and resources alongside support and advice.

It’s all part of our Time to Talk Derbyshire campaign which began on 7 February. Since the launch, more than 50 local businesses and organisations have got involved with the campaign, sharing messages and promoting the support on offer.

Hospitality and tourism jobs on offer

Hundreds of hospitality and tourism jobs are set to be showcased at a local recruitment fair in March.

hospitality jobs

The Hospitality & Tourism Jobs Fair will be at The Whitworth, Darley Dale on Monday 21 March. A wide variety of exciting, rewarding and long-term careers will be offered by the county’s hospitality and tourism industry.

Offering a fantastic opportunity for both job seekers and employers, the free jobs fair takes place during English Tourism Week (18-27 March 2022) and aims to address the ongoing hospitality recruitment crisis, whilst helping to change perceptions that hospitality jobs offer ‘long hours for little pay’.

The event, which is run by Visit Peak District and Derbyshire which we help to fund, will include live have-a-go demos, one-to-one advice, fast-track applications and inspirational speakers promoting the industry as a great place to work.

It's free to attend. Turn up on the day or register in advance.

Planting a tree for the Platinum Jubilee

A hornbeam tree has been planted by our Civic Chairman Councillor Jean Wharmby to mark our support for the Queen’s Green Canopy.

The Queen's Green Canopy is a nationwide tree-planting initiative created to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

People across the country are being encouraged to plant trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy, just one of a number of national initiatives and events to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Councillor Jean Wharmby is pictured in Hayfield with our Countryside Service landscape construction officer Pete Bunting.

The tree was planted in a grassed area close to the Sett Valley Trail in Hayfield. Two hawthorns and two rowans were also planted nearby.

As well as supporting the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, the trees planted will count towards the council’s target of planting one million trees across the county by 2030.

Anyone planning on planting a tree can get advice from our Countryside Service by emailing

Independent report highlights progress

An independent report has said that we're working well and are in a strong position to get good results for the people of Derbyshire.

The Local Government Association report is the result of a visit made to us by a Corporate Peer Challenge team last October.

The aim of a Corporate Peer Challenge is to note what we do well and suggest areas we could improve.

We had invited the team to follow up on a visit they made in October 2018 and carry out a 'corporate health check' on progress that we've made in the past three years.

The new report states that as well as making progress since the 2018 visit, we have excelled in emergency situations and stood up in times of crisis.
