 Community projects, groups and charities that support people across Derbyshire are invited to apply for grants.
Our Cabinet agreed to the funding so that we can support the vital work being done by community groups, local enterprises and volunteers in the county.
There are five main priorities for the funding which has been set aside to support the vital work being done by community groups, local enterprises and volunteers in the county.
They are:
- helping residents to feel safe
- supporting young people
- encouraging residents to be more active
- being ‘greener’ and more sustainable
- encouraging people to get more involved in their communities to help them thrive
Organisations and charities that help toward those ambitions will be able to apply for grants from the £1.5m pot from the end of January. Grants are divided into four main types:
- small grants – supporting activity or projects under £1,000
- medium grants – supporting activity or projects between £1,001 - £20,000
- large grants – supporting projects and programmes between £20,001 - £50,000
- exceptional – supporting projects which are over £50,001.
Community groups looking for a new challenge for 2022 are being asked by Derbyshire County Council to consider running one of its libraries.
The county council is using the new year to re-launch its drive to find local groups across the county who are interested in taking over the reins at one of 14 county council-run libraries earmarked for community management. These are: Borrowash, Brimington, Clowne, Creswell, Duffield, Gamesley, Hadfield, Hayfield, Holmewood, Killamarsh, Pinxton, Somercotes, Whaley Bridge and Whitwell.
County council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture, Tourism and Climate Change Councillor Barry Lewis is encouraging community groups to take the first steps now and register their interest following a pause in the programme due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Councillor Lewis said: “Our libraries are strong community assets with a wide range of uses and benefits and are highly valued by the council and the people who use them.
“We’re working hard to ensure the library service thrives and grows and to do this we need local communities, groups and volunteers from across the county to work with us.
“We’re hoping established groups, organisations or individuals wanting to form a group will seize the opportunity in 2022 to take over their local library and help to shape its future to suit the needs of their community.”
The Community Managed Library programme is part of the county council’s `Libraries for Derbyshire’ strategy which includes a plan to transfer 20 council-run libraries out of 45 over to community management over the coming years.
The first milestone has already been reached with the handing over of Woodville Library, now called Woodville Community Managed Library, near Swadlincote, to Circularity.org.
Five other groups are currently working with the council with a view to taking charge of their local libraries in the future. These libraries are Etwall, Melbourne, Old Whittington, Tideswell and Wingerworth.

Financial support for successful groups will be provided with grant funding for five years. Our cabinet members are considering proposals this week to keep a rise in council tax as low as possible while continuing to protect and invest in vital services and managing on-going significant budget pressures.
For the coming year, 2022-23, we are proposing to raise council tax by 3% – which is 2% lower than the 5% permitted by government.
It would mean an extra 62p per week for an average band B household and for a band D household the rise would be 80p per week.
This takes into account the increasing pressures on services across the board, which have been impacted further by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the continuing and significant rise in demand for adult and children’s social care.
The proposal is set out in our Revenue Budget Report which also details our savings target, which is approximately £67m over the course of the Five Year Financial Plan up to 2026-27, with savings needed for the year ahead estimated at £8m.
At the meeting Cabinet will make recommendations to Full Council to consider when it meets on Wednesday 2 February 2022.

 Businesses across Derbyshire may be entitled to additional financial support if they have faced disruption due to the current wave of Covid-19 and the latest restrictions.
The government has launched two grant schemes. They are:
- Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant Scheme (OHLG) – one-off grants of up to £6,000 for businesses in the hospitality, leisure and accommodation sectors
- Additional Restrictions Grant Scheme – for businesses severely impacted by coronavirus restrictions and the latest wave of Covid infections.
The scheme is open for applications until the end of February this year and all payments will be made by the end of March. Please apply to your local district or borough council.
Eligible businesses in the Derbyshire Dales will be contacted directly by the district council and do not need to apply.

- go through a few initial checks before you're assessed
- have some experience of caring for children.
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities (for example, LGBT+, any ethnicity, race, culture and religion); single or in a relationship, married or civil partnership. You can be in work or not, and either rent or own your home.

In 2022 Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.
Derbyshire voluntary and community organisations can apply to the national Let’s Create Jubilee Fund to help them deliver creative activity for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The aim is to empower community organisations to work collaboratively with artists and cultural organisations to produce fresh work that is meaningful to their local community.
The grants will range from £750 to £10,000. Applications close on Monday 28 February. Those successful will be informed on 1 April and projects are to take place in June 2022.

Calling Derbyshire cooks. Could you be the creator of the perfect Platinum Pudding for the Queen? A nationwide baking competition is underway to find a brand new pudding to be dedicated to Her Majesty. The competition is open to UK residents aged 8 years and over and the closing date for entries is 4 February 2022.
Five finalists will be chosen and invited to prepare their pudding for an expert judging panel at the live final the week commencing 14 March 2022.
Judges include Dame Mary Berry, Monica Galetti and Buckingham Palace Head Chef Mark Flanagan. The winning recipe will be made available to the public and the pudding will be enjoyed at Big Jubilee Lunches during the Jubilee weekend, and by generations to come.
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on 27 January each year. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi death camps and is intended to help us remember and become aware of the impact of Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides.
It is a time when people can express their hope and support for the end of war, and their sorrow for dreadful treatment of their fellow human beings. It enables us to look ahead and consider what contribution we can make towards helping those affected to rebuild their lives.
Derby and Derbyshire have a proud history of supporting communities fleeing from atrocities. We have provided safety to post-war refugees after Second World War, refugees from Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, and Kosovo in the 90s through to more recent refugees from countries such as Eritrea, Sudan, Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria.
In the past 150 years, millions of people have lost their lives in genocide or mass atrocities. We must learn and remember lessons from the past to create a safer, better future.
Public services play a vital role in tackling prejudice and discrimination by working with our diverse communities, taking action to encourage greater cohesion, creating a safe and supportive environment, and protecting the most vulnerable.
Light a Candle at 8pm
At 8pm on 27 January 2022, the HMD Trust encourages to Light the Darkness asking households across the UK to light a candle and safely put it in their windows, as a symbol to:
- remember those who lost their lives
- stand together against prejudice and hatred today

Derbyshire libraries including Alfreton, Ashbourne, Ripley, New Mills, Dronfield, Newbold, Swadlincote and Buxton have organised book displays marking HMD. The books are a mixture of fiction & non-fiction and are suitable for children and adults alike.
