We've all been moved by the scenes in Afghanistan of desperate people, who had been employed locally, fleeing the Taliban.
We, and district and borough councils in the county, stand ready to take part in the government’s scheme to relocate Afghan nationals who have made it to the UK.
The scheme will be funded by the government, with councils being asked to provide homes, school places, help with GP and Job Centre Plus registration, and so on.
In Derbyshire involvement in the scheme is dependent on identifying suitable properties to give families a home. It'll then be a matter of waiting for the Home Office to allocate families before the resettlement process can begin. We'd expect to be able to welcome the first family to Derbyshire in the near future.
On 1 October the law on allergen labelling for prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) foods will change. This has come about following the death of teenager Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died after suffering an allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette in 2016.
 Next month ‘Natasha’s Law’ will come into effect, meaning all food prepacked for direct sale must be labelled with a full list of ingredients, with the 14 allergens emphasised on the ingredients list if present.
We're supporting a Food Standards Agency campaign to promote the new rules, keep customers safe and protect food businesses from falling foul of Natasha's Law.
Businesses that don’t comply with the allergen rules risk making customers ill and they risk damaging their reputation and their profits.
The 14 allergens include common ones like peanuts and gluten, to less well known triggers for allergic reactions like mustard and celery. Around two million people in the UK suffer from allergies, including 2% of adults and 8% of children.

Spectacular large-scale projections will light up two Derbyshire landmarks in a new night-time attraction celebrating the county’s rich heritage this autumn
Visitors will be able to see Derbyshire’s heritage and history of innovation brought to life in ‘Shine A Light’ – an extravaganza of light and sound taking place on four dates in October against the impressive backdrops of Chatsworth House and Cromford Mills.
Delivered by internationally renowned Derbyshire-born video projection artists Illuminos, Shine A Light brings together awe-inspiring illuminations and projections in a visually stunning display inspired by Voices From The Peak – a celebration of the county in sound created by local poet and performer Mark Gwynne Jones to celebrate the Peak District National Park’s 70th birthday earlier this year.
We've commissioned this one-of-a-kind experience to provide fun and entertainment for you and your family, and to celebrate Derbyshire’s rich history and heritage, while boosting the visitor economy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Each outdoor event is a fusion of visuals, music and sound culminating in a large-scale moving animation projected onto the building every 20 minutes throughout each evening.

It's not long till our popular festival returns to Elvaston Castle on 18 and 19 September.
 This is a brilliant day out for all the family with lots of fun activities for children and plenty to keep you entertained. Professional demonstrators and performers will share their amazing skills, from wood carving, turning, bushcraft, and willow weaving to safe opportunities for you to have a go.
Visitor attractions include outdoor theatre, historical re-enactment, Green Man storytelling, working horses and traditional fairground rides.
A huge array of stalls selling bespoke gifts, crafts, textiles, furniture and timber products. Hungry visitors will have a wide variety of food and drink to choose from – including vegetarian and vegan options. Wildlife, heritage and tourism attractions here to inspire you.
We look forward to welcoming both new and returning visitors for a great weekend this year.
Special event parking charges apply to all visitors that weekend. Payment is cash only:
- £10 a car per day
- £5 a motorcycle per day
- £15 weekend ticket available.
Payment gives visitors entry to both the festival and the country park on those dates. Dogs are welcome on leads. A designated disabled parking area will give close access from the showground.
We’re joining the NHS, local charities and organisations in supporting World Suicide Prevention Day which is on 10 September.
The effects of suicide can be far reaching and long lasting. Many people − friends, family and colleagues feel the impact.
That's why professionals, community groups, volunteers and individuals are working together to raise awareness and to help to reduce the risks of suicide.
As part of the suicide prevention work in Derbyshire there will be events held at several football matches, and widespread promotion of local support and services, throughout September.
Do you know of any organisations in your area that help people recover from drug or alcohol addiction?
Small groups and charities can apply for up to £40,000 from our Recovery from Alcohol and Drug Dependence grant for two-year projects.
The activities or project proposed must cover a two-year period, of which we'll fund the first year.
Organisations will need to demonstrate how their projects will help Derbyshire residents throughout treatment and into long-term recovery.
Successful bidders will also have to show they have funding for the second year of their project.
There's an eligibility cap of £1m on the annual income of the organisations who are able to bid for the grant.
The deadline for applications is Friday 15 October 2021 at midday.
