This November - we're celebrating International Games Week, we offer the chance to learn simple bookbinding and jewellery making, we're excited to welcome a star from the pantomime to Chesterfield Library, and much more!

Clowne

Opening Hours Consultation

Residents are to get the opportunity to have their say on plans to revise opening hours at 7 Derbyshire libraries.

We have launched local consultations at the following libraries so that people can give their views on opening times and reduced hours:

Brimington     Clowne     Creswell     Duffield

Gamesley     Killamarsh     Somercotes

The changes are part of an overall revision of opening hours across all our libraries, which are an element of our innovative Libraries for Derbyshire programme agreed last year.

The local consultations, which will run for 6 weeks, from 7 October to 17 November, cover the remaining 7 libraries earmarked for community management where groups have yet to come forward. These libraries are currently open for more than 18 hours per week.

We're asking residents to take part in our consultations and have a say.

Separate online consultation forms are available for each of the 7 libraries. Printed copies of the consultations are also available at each of the 7 libraries.

Book Start

Bookstart

Do you have a child aged 0-12 months or 3 years old? Have they received their Bookstart Pack?

Bookstart is the world's first national book-gifting programme and aims to encourage a love of books, stories and rhymes in children from as young an age as possible.

All children in Derbyshire are eligible for the following packs

  • The Bookstart Baby Pack which is usually gifted via Health Visitors during the 6-8 week check
  • The Bookstart Treasure Pack which is usually gifted via Early Years settings to their 3 year olds

If your child does not visit the Health Visitor or attend Nursery they can still get a pack by contacting the local library. Neither you nor your child has to be a member of the library to receive these packs.

recommend

This Month We Recommend You Read...

This is what we think you should request from our online catalogue this month...

In children's fiction we have the fourteenth entry in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series - Wrecking Ball, where an unexpected inheritance enables the Heffley family to make major improvements to their home. They soon find construction isn't all it's cracked up to be...

In Children's non-fiction: Go Green! by Liz Gogerly. This book is full of ideas for reducing and reusing. After a children's birthday party leaves lots of rubbish left over, the children talk to local people, parents and teachers and learn a lot about going green. A timely book on an important issue, and a great way to join in with #GoGreenDerbyshire.

In adult's non-fiction we recommend Roaring Girls: The Forgotten Feminists of British History. From notorious cross-dressing thief, Mary Frith to rebel slave Mary Prince, this is a bold, inspiring and powerfully written story of eight formidable women.

Request your copies from our online catalogue here.

The Continuing Adventures of Lionel, the Library Llama!

Our intrepid Library Llama, Lionel, had a day of fun in Wirksworth this month for the town's Wizarding Day! He helped kids create Whomping Willows and Marauders Maps, and took part in a Dementor Hunt. Best of all, we had over 700 people into Wirksworth library joining in all the fun!

Be sure to look out for him at other library events near you, and let us know if you've spotted him on your travels!
