Markham Vale company wins major contract
ScottishPower has chosen Markham Vale based company Meter Provida to deal
with the triaging of ‘as new’ meters and the recycling of old ones.
This contract
win marks another milestone in the specialist company’s recent growth, which
has seen its workforce expand fourfold in the last three years.
ScottishPower
supplies energy to 5 million households and businesses across the UK and is
currently part of the smart meter rollout, aiming to provide a new meter to all
of its customers by 2020.
Proper disposal
of legacy meters is vital for ensuring the smart meter rollout meets Government
targets on emissions, as well as guaranteeing those who own legacy meters are
properly recompensed.
Stephen Burr,
Managing Director of Meter Provida, said:
“This is an
important step in the expansion of Meter Provida’s work by offering an
end-to-end service – providing reverse logistics and recycling of old meters to
support ScottishPower in delivering their smart meter rollout.
“We are
delighted to be working closely with ScottishPower to support their delivery of
the smart meter roll out.”
Andrew Ward,
Smart Director of ScottishPower, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Meter
Provida to support us in collecting and examining our removed meters. Where
possible Meter Provida will recycle existing meters in an environmentally friendly
way. This is an often overlooked part of the smart meter rollout.”

Apprentices at Markham Vale
Six new
apprentices are geared up and ready to launch their new career with Markham
Vale company AW Repair Group this month.
In partnership
with AutoRaise and Emtec Training, the engaging and inspired youngsters will be
donning their corporate blue and orange uniform across the group’s five sites
including the one at Waterloo Court Markham Vale.
Harvey,
Charlie, Jack, Ryan, Joshua and Leon follow in the footsteps of Georgie, Kane
and Joe who are now Year Two and Three apprentices with AW Repair Group.
 The 16-19 year
olds will be training in a variety of panel, paint and MET roles as well as the
new multi-skilled apprenticeship trailblazed by AutoRaise and now government
approved.
AutoRaise are a
charity dedicated to improving the industry skills shortage and have a single,
focused purpose: to promote the industry as a sustainable, attractive and
rewarding place to work. They aim to bring new blood into the industry,
specifically engaging young people aged between 13 and 24, and to help
employers nurture their Apprentices into qualified talent – the future owners,
managers and leaders in our industry.
Bob Linwood,
CEO of AutoRaise, said “Andrew, James, Jade and the AW Group have really
grabbed hold of the whole apprenticeship opportunity and it feels great that
AutoRaise helped stimulate some of this initiative. We all felt that an Autumn
Showcase Event would be good but as it turns out, AW have been able to create a
fresh cohort of motivated young people to join the group as apprentices. It’s
the latest indication of the impact AutoRaise are having on the industry’s
skills shortage”.
The apprentices
will receive a branded roll cabinet and top box starter pack including
essential beginner tools, certification folder, personnel handbook, USB drive
and an AW notepad within a satchel during their induction at AW.
Following a
minimum 4 weeks employment, an Emtec assessor will visit the site and meet the
manager and apprentice ahead of college training dates being confirmed.
Jade Johnson,
AW Repair Group’s Business Development, Marketing and Communications said: “We
have formed relationships with schools and colleges across the regions ready
for next year’s intake with a growing list of interested young people. “As we have already filled our available
places this year we will be working with AutoRaise to hold an event in March
2018.”

Lottery cash set to help unearth mining history at
Markham Vale
Derbyshire
County Council and the community group behind the Walking Together Mining
Memorial are celebrating success in securing grant funding towards another
heritage project based on previous mining activities at Markham Vale.
The
project which is set to unearth the untold stories of Markham Colliery has been
given the green light thanks to £35,000 awarded from the Heritage Lottery Fund
(HLF). Research into the lives of the
thousands of local men who worked at the site between 1882 and 1993 will be
carried out as part of 'The Story Mine' project and shared on a new website.
And
residents will be invited to a number of events organised by the Markham Mining
Memorial Community Working Group − which supported our grant application − to
hear about the project's latest discoveries.
The working group is made up of 25 members including former miners,
local historians, representatives from schools in Derbyshire and relatives of
those who worked at the site.
Our Cabinet Member for Economic
Development and Regeneration Councillor Tony King said:
"We're
delighted to receive this grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help us
unearth more of Markham's mining history which we can share with future
generations for years to come.
"Markham Colliery was at the heart
of this area for a long time and lots of people including myself will have many
memories of the site and the brave men that worked there.
"I'd like to thank the Markham
Mining Memorial Community Working Group for all their fantastic work and the
Heritage Lottery Fund and National Lottery players for making the project
possible."
We've already made great strides at
Markham Vale to remember its mining history with the permanent 'Walking
Together' memorial which will eventually feature 106 figures stretching between
the village of Duckmanton in Chesterfield and the former pithead. It symbolises
a miner's journey to and from work and represents the 106 men who lost their
lives in three accidents at the site in 1937, 1938 and 1973. A dedicated website has also been established for the
Walking Together project – see https://walkingtogether.org.uk/

unveiling ceremony? If you are, then

Staff changes at the Environment Centre
There has been a number of staff changes
at the Environment Centre over the past few weeks; firstly Sophie Bradbury
joined the team on a temporary basis to provide support to Trudi Saxton and
Debbie Renshaw pending the appointment of a permanent team member.
Sophie’s contract has now come to and end; so
we say good bye to Sophie – or rather bon voyage as from January. Sophie and
her partner will be travelling through several countries in Central America
over the coming months.
As one team member leaves, another new face arrives; a
big welcome goes to Sue Gozzard who brings a wealth of new skills and knowledge
to the team gained from her previous work in business administration at a local
