Retail crime and shoplifting offences
The South Lakes Neighbourhood Policing Team continue to lead on preventing and detecting retail crime locally.
The weeks immediately prior to Christmas often see an increase in the number of offences reported to police.
During this time we had both uniformed high visibility patrols and plain clothed officers working with retailers to prevent, catch and convict shoplifters.
Whilst many offences are committed by people who live locally, distance is no obstacle to dealing with criminals.
On 27th November, Marian Fararu (33) was sentenced at South Cumbria Magistrates Court for stealing over £2000 of property from Co-Op Pharmacies in Barrow and Ulverston.
The investigation was led by Ulverston Beat Officer PC Jen Grimes and resulted in Fararu being charged to Court with five offences. Fararu was convicted of the offences at Court and is currently being held in an Immigration Centre pending deportation. Fararu was fined £1250.
The South Lakes area has some of the highest positive outcome rates nationally for retail theft offences and the Neighbourhood Policing Team are determined to make that even better in 2025.

Rural Safety
On 15 December, PCSO Helen Madden displayed Wide & Slow Horse Signs around the Gleaston area.
These signs are aimed at promoting awareness of horses and their riders on the highway, however, Cumbria Police would like to remind all users of the road to be aware of potential hazards and vulnerabilities during the darker days of winter, whether that is cyclists, pedestrians or any vehicle.
