Op Lantern - Rural Crime Fighting
On February 22, we attended Penrith Auction Mart ahead of a large machinery sale.
We've carried out checks on a number of vehicles and trailers and all were in order.
Thanks to Penrith & District Farmers Mart for welcoming us, and to Datatag ID Limited for providing the team with vehicle identification training earlier this week.
If we make it harder for stolen vehicles to be sold on, it makes them less appealing to prospective thieves.
We will continue to carry out visits to Auctions and Farms to engage with people, and offer crime prevention advice.
So far this year in addition to our routine patrol activity, we've held four dedicated nights of action.
These took place across our entire neighbourhood policing area and involved over 10 members of our team, four special constables and nearly 20 farmwatch volunteers.
We pro-actively stopped numerous vehicles and reacted to sightings by our volunteers.
We've also seen our mounted volunteers committing their own time to being the eyes and ears of the rural communities.
We're now expanding our reach into rural watch WhatsApp groups. Officers are able to pass and react to live time information and this has led to the recovery of stolen property and arrests.
There's lots more exciting plans underway, including continuing to learn from Colleagues both Locally and Nationally and improving working relationships with key stakeholders and our rural communities.
We're always trying to find innovative ways to make Cumbria a hostile place for rural criminals.
Thank you for continuing to report suspicious activity. Recent pieces of information have helped us identify suspects and progress investigations.
This is all done under the Op Lantern banner: Cumbria's response to rural crime.

Action taken following speeding concerns in Appleby
We recently invited all residents in Appleby to complete a community survey to report any problems to us.
From our results residents told us speeding was an issue to this community.
We have recently placed the Speed Indicator Device on Bongate & it will soon be visible at Battlebarrow. This allows us to collate data of the speed of vehicles over a period of time.
We will continue to be out and about with the hand held speed gun in these areas and take appropriate action!

The Special Constabulary is a voluntary body, whose officers form a vital part of the police family, working alongside their regular colleagues to police the communities of Cumbria. Specials perform a variety of police duties to support regular officers with the day-to-day policing of Cumbria.
People become a Special Constable for a variety of reasons. Some people have free time and have a desire to give something back to their community, some people are very happy in their present job but want something totally different in their spare time, some people may have wanted to work in the police but for different reasons they have gone down a different career path. Specials have the same powers as regular officers, wear the same uniform and carry the same equipment as regular officers.
In all these circumstances the Special Constabulary gives you the opportunity to have a second career. This is a great opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and gain experience in a wide range of policing duties.
