A word from your local Inspector
In this newsletter you will see we are continuing to conduct patrols in Workington following reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB), we know the detrimental effect this has on the community so please continue to report.
As you will read below the team was recognised for their work around ASB in Workington which resulted in:
- 82% reduction in ASB calls for service
- 68% reduction in youth-related crimes including use and possession of weapons
- 36 Teachers trained to educate children on alcohol use through the Alcohol Education Trust charity
- 67% reduction in alcohol related admissions to West Cumberland Hospital for U18’s.
- 90% of residents agreed or strongly agreed that the work carried out in St Michael’s Ward made a positive impact on their feelings of safety and Local businesses and community leaders have fed back positively that this approach has improved their quality of lives and confidence in Cumbria Police.

StreetSafe
PCSO Rachel Pape conducted a number of StreetSafes on Westfield Bridge Court, Chapel Street and Church Road, Harrington.
These are in relation to hub referrals into issues such as drug dealing and ASB.
Please, if you received one, fill out the form and send it back in the stamped addressed envelope.
Street Safe surveys are an opportunity for you to raise any concerns or observations you have that impacting your area for our team to look into. If you have received one of these surveys, please let us know your thoughts by completing the form and sending it back in the accompanying return envelope.
We wish to remind members of the public if they do not feel confident to report ASB issues via the online reporting form or directly to police, you can also call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Community reporting is vital to receive an effective policing response and without communities passing on the information of the issues in their area, we may never become aware of it as a problem.
Anti-social behaviour
Our PCSOs have been conducting high visibility patrols in Workington Town Centre following reports of children from the local school causing issues around The Entertainer.
Please continue to report incidents to us and if you do not feel confident to report ASB issues directly to Police via 101 or via the online reporting form, they can call crime stoppers confidentially on 0800 555 111.

Mini Police - Victoria Junior School
PCSO Rachel Pape attended Victoria Junior School on 21st September to read the applications from pupils who wished to be part of the Mini Police.
On 5th October, Rachel returned to the school having selected the pupils to take part in the Mini Police.
We will keep you updated on what the pupils are doing as part of the Mini Police programme.
About the Mini Police
The Mini police is a fun and innovative police engagement programme aimed at children aged 9-11 years old. The objective is to provide a fun and interactive way to introduce children to a positive experience of policing and to get them involved in the local community.
The wider aims include building trust and with communities, promoting responsible citizenship, and a sense of social responsibility, improving relationships between the police and young people. We operate a corporate and structured delivery platform which involves early intervention, the delivery of safety messages, preventative education and long-term problem solving. The Mini Police Officers not only assist the police service, they also carry that ownership and pride back into the community they live in.

Operation Respect - Multi-agency collaboration
This summer, Allerdale Local Focus Hub partners joined forces to deliver four community day events across Allerdale as part of an ongoing multi-agency collaboration known as Operation Respect.
The Allerdale Local Focus Hub is a partnership between various organisations such as Cumbria Police, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, Family Action, Cumbria County Council, and local housing associations, Riverside, Home Group, Westfield and Castles and Coasts.
The events were held at the following locations:
• Hillside, Maryport – led by Castles and Coasts Housing Association
• The Oval Community Centre, Salterbeck – led by Riverside
• Greenacres, Wigton – led by Home Group
• Windsor Road, Workington – led by Westfield Housing
Emma Thompson, Allerdale Borough Council’s Senior Manager for Community Safety and Resilience said:
“All four of the Operation Respect events have been incredibly successful. It has been fantastic to see partners from across the Allerdale Local Focus Hub coming together and engaging with members of the public about fly-tipping, anti-social behaviour, housing, homelessness, financial advice, and health and wellbeing.”

School talks
PCSO Hannah Donaughee delivered a school talk on road safety at Seaton Juniors on 28th September.
Hannah spoke to the children and gave them advice on being safe when playing outside and crossing the roads.
On 10th October, Rachel attended the school again to speak to children about Halloween and Bonfire safety.

🏆Neighbourhood Policing Awards 2022 🏆
The Allerdale Neighbourhood Policing team of T/Inspector Scott Adams, PC Catherine Higson, T/PS Leesa Edwards, PCSO Rachel Pape and Senior Manager Community Safety & Resilience Emma Thompson received the Neighbourhood Policing Team Innovation Award on October 11.
The awards recognised the team's response to youth related ASB in Workington Town Centre.
To address the issues the team used a problem-solving approach to resolve the issues, which included the implementation of a Community Beat Officer, a dedicated, locally-based officer working within the community to tackle local issues. This work seen a significant reduction in calls for service, reduction in youth related crimes and a reduction in alcohol related admissions to west Cumbria. Local businesses and community leaders have fed back positively that this approach has improved their quality of lives and confidence in Cumbria Police.
Though the Allerdale Local Focus Hub the team proactively coordinated joint community engagement, targeted foot patrols, multi-agency community events and longer-term solutions, including apprenticeships with local business for key offenders.

Neurodiversity Support
PCSO Pete Nichol has continued to support our communities with his lived experiance.
On 25th September Pete visited a young person in Workington to support their family with his autism and ADHD.
On the same day Pete also visited a family in Workington with Shirley Murphy from the Allerdale/Copeland autism support group to support a young person and her family with her autism.

Police joined by partners to tackle hate crime
Emergency services and health services across Cumbria are partnering together to support hate crime awareness week.
T/Detective Superintendent Matt Scott Strategic lead for hate crime said “We know that hate crime within Cumbria often goes unreported.
“We are reaching out to our communities and the many people that visit Cumbria to report incidents to us so we can investigate, bring offenders to justice and signpost victims to the appropriate support."
You can report a crime in several ways:
- If it’s an emergency and the crime is taking place, call 999 and ask for the police.
- In an non-emergency, you can report online - Report a Hate Crime - Cumbria Constabulary - or speak to an officer via 101.
- You can go to your local police station.
- You can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you want to remain anonymous.
- If you’ve experienced hate crime, you can also report the incident online through True Vision

Cumbria Constabulary is fully behind a national commitment by police chiefs to attend all home burglaries – with such crimes already receiving specialist CID expertise in this county.
In Cumbria, every burglary where someone’s home is entered is already investigated by a detective, meaning the offences become the focus of specialist investigative skills from the outset. Read more here.

Think SPEED and become a better, safer driver
Speed enforcement operations are taking place across the country in October – including here in Cumbria – as part of a national drive to highlight the risk of driving above the speed limit.

Neighbourhood policing awards 2022
Neighbourhood policing officers have been recognised for their hard work within our communities at the neighbourhood policing awards.
The awards were held during Cumbria Constabulary’s Neighbourhood Policing Conference which were held on October 11.
Eight awards were presented to officers and PCSO’s by Chief Constable Michelle Skeer and Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall in recognition of their contribution to neighbourhood policing. Read more here.
