Operation SCEPTRE - Knife crime

From 09 to 15 November we joined forces across the county to support the national Operation Sceptre campaign to tackle knife crime.

The week supported the work we carry out all year round to ensure residents are safe from knife crime in their communities.  

As part of this our officers carried out high visibility patrols and targeted individuals who are known to carry knives.  We also visited commercial premises throughout the district and spoke with businesses in regards the law in selling and purchasing of knives.  We are pleased to report that all retailers were knowledgeable of the required legislation. 

COVID guidelines

Several concerns  have been raised that youths from Millom Secondary School have been congregating out of School in large numbers. 

PCSO Paul Booth has been in contact with the school and provided advice. Reports have since decreased and the majority of pupils appear to be abiding by current guidance. 

Speeding concerns raised

PCSO Booth has been out targeting speeders in the following areas Poolside Haverigg, Mainsgate Road, The Hill and The Green Millom.

This was following concerns raised by Parish Councils and local residents.

A number of advisory letters were sent out to the offending motorists.  Other areas in the South Copeland area will also be targeted. 

Police and Trading Standards work together

Our officers conducted a joint operation with Trading Standards on the 25th November targeting premises believed to be selling counterfeit cigarettes.

This work is part of an ongoing operation to target this type of fraudulent activity.

If you think a business has broken the law or acted unfairly, you can report them to Trading Standards.

Trading Standards use the information you give them to investigate unfair trading and illegal business activity, like rogue traders and scams.

Trading Standards can take businesses to court or stop them operating, but they won’t help you fix your problem - for example, they can’t help you get a refund.

Lamping concerns

There have been concerns raised regarding illegal lamping taking place in the Bootle, Eskmeals and Whicham areas. 

Patrols have been increased in the area and all farms are in the process of being contacted around prevention measures on rural crime and joining Farmwatch.

Warrant executed

Officers from Copeland Proactive Team executed a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at a premises on Oxford Street, Millom where a small quantity of controlled substance was found.  Investigations are ongoing.  

Road Traffic Collisions

Police have responded to several road traffic collisions on the A595 corridor throughout the area recently and luckily these have only involved minor injuries and no criminal matters were involved.
