Welcome to this special edition of the Connecting Cumbria newsletter.
This edition focuses on one of the most significant changes to the UK's telecommunications infrastructure in decades: the retirement of the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) on 31 January 2027.
We also share the latest news from Connecting Cumbria, celebrate how another local business is using digital connectivity to support what they do, and explain how you could become our next case study story.
The UK's traditional analogue phone network, commonly known as the PSTN, will be permanently retired on 31 January 2027. This nationwide change means landline services will be delivered using digital technology over broadband connections instead of the ageing copper-based network.
This change is currently underway and for most people, the transition will be managed by their telecoms provider, but it is important that residents, businesses, community organisations and voluntary groups start preparing now.
|
The PSTN was designed decades ago and is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Moving to modern digital services will provide:
- More reliable communications
- Improved call quality
- Greater resilience
- Modern features and functionality
- Support for future digital services
- Speak to your communications provider.
- Review any devices that rely on a phone line.
- Make plans for upgrades where necessary.
- Check that vulnerable family members or service users are supported during the transition.
Connecting Cumbria will continue working with partners across the county to raise awareness and help communities prepare for this important milestone.
The important message is - don't leave it until the last minute. 31 January 2027 will arrive sooner than you think.
The PSTN has supported the UK for around 150 years, but as we move towards a modern, digital future, organisations still using services connected to the network need to understand what the switch-off means for them.
If your business relies on phone lines, payment terminals, alarm systems or other connected services, don't leave it until the last minute.
Contact your communications provider to understand your options and put a migration plan in place before the deadline.
