This months newsletter includes a range of learning opportunities and resources which can support you as a practitioner or the individuals you are working with.
Don't forget during November CSAB will be supporting National Safeguarding Adults Week, this year’s theme is “Prevention – Act Before Abuse”, which is aims to shift the focus from reacting to harm, to proactively creating safer environments that prevent abuse from happening in the first place.
During the week the Ann Craft Trust are offering a range of free national learning opportunities.
Locally Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board (CSAB), will be offering learning sessions and publishing daily briefings including resources and information from ACT.
Also, watch out for the opportunity to contribute your views as a practitioner, during the week we will launch our CSAB 2025 Workforce Survey.
Learning from Domestic Abuse Related Death Reviews (DARDR)
A Domestic Abuse Related Death Review (DARDR), is carried out when a person aged 16 or over dies as a result of violence, abuse or neglect by a relative or someone they've been in an intimate relationship with. This also covers deaths by suicide, where Domestic Abuse has been a feature.
This learning session will cover thematic learning from DARDRs in Cumbria and briefly cover:
- Improvement in Professional Curiosity
- Multi-Agency Involvement and Information Sharing
- Risk Assessment and Management of Risk
- Handover and Step Down
- Working in-line with the Victims Code 2021
- Learning and Development

Self-neglect - Learning from Safeguarding Adult Reviews
CSAB invites practitioners across the system to a Lunch & Learn session focused on the recent Thematic Self-Neglect Safeguarding Adults Review (SAR). This review explores the lives and circumstances of six adults in Cumbria who sadly died while experiencing self-neglect.
Led by Suzy Braye, Independent SAR reviewer and author, the session will:
- Share key learning and good practice from the SAR
- Encourage reflection
- Launch refreshed CSAB guidance
- Signpost resources to support your practice

The 16 days of Activism & Domestic Abuse
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that begins on the 25th of November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and runs until the 10th of December, Human Rights Day.

Extra session: How Men are affected by Domestic Abuse, Sexual Violence and Harmful Practices.
This session is part of Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day and aims to raise awareness of the unique challenges men face when experiencing abuse. These include barriers to disclosure, societal expectations around masculinity, and the stigma that can prevent help-seeking.

National Referral Mechanism: webinar for First Responders
The Human Trafficking Foundation (HTF) hosts annual webinars to support First Responders - professionals who have a legal duty under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 to identify and refer potential victims of modern slavery. The webinar focuses on improving understanding of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), the UK’s framework for identifying and supporting victims.

Every Life Matters - Autumn seminar
Every Life Matters is proud to launch their very first Autumn Seminar Series. These seminars are designed for people who work with, volunteer with, or advocate for autistic people. Starting with two vital half-day sessions on Autism & Suicide Prevention in November.

Learning from a Safeguarding Adults Review (SAR) - Tom
The Safeguarding Adults Board (SAR) and West Sussex Community Safety Wellbeing Service are pleased to share a new training video developed in partnership which brings to life the key learning from the SAR Tom final report.
The review, published in 2024, identified important learning across agencies working with those living with a disability, particularly in relation to safeguarding, information sharing, controlling and coercive behaviour, disguised compliance, professional curiosity, and trauma-informed practice.
This new resource features Tom talking through his story and highlighting key themes. Tom is keen to help staff understand the crucial role you play in identifying and responding to safeguarding for those experiencing exploitation and abuse.

North East & North Cumbria Learning Disability Network have shared learning and resources from the lives and deaths of people with learning disability and autistic people across the region.
