A reminder that Cumberland householders can now download, bookmark and print the next four months of waste and recycling collection information.
Householders can check the dates for June through to the end of September 2025 by entering their post code and clicking on their home address from the drop down options.
As more changes to collection dates are planned in late September, householders are advised to continue checking their collections as they may be subject to change.
We are continuing to deliver replacement 180 litre bins in the former Allerdale area.
We received a large number of requests -10,500 households - and are advising residents that don’t get their new bin over the next few weeks to carry on using their existing bin and to recycle as much as they can.
If you can’t fit all their waste into your existing 120 litre bin, you can put out up to two bags of excess waste.
If you provided an email address when requesting a replacement bin, you will be contacted a day or a few days before the delivery.
We can't take additional orders for replacement 180 litre bins at the moment, but there will be another chance to order one between Tuesday 1 July and Thursday 31 July.
Householders may also be eligible for an even larger or extra bin if they have a large household, young children in nappies or your household produces extra waste due to medical needs. Apply at www.cumberland.gov.uk/waste/largerbin

We have welcomed plans to unlock land at Moorside in West Cumbria for new nuclear power generation.
The news announced on Tuesday (10 June), formed part of a broader announcement by the Prime Minister giving the go ahead to other major new nuclear projects across the country ahead of the Spending Review.
He confirmed that land at Moorside will be freed up to be leased and marketed by a local development corporation to pave the way for a new nuclear power plant. This ‘Pioneer Park’ will seek to attract Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and the energy intensive industry they could power.
Cumberland’s four MPs, our Leader, the leaders of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd and local union and business representatives set up the Cumberland Nuclear Future Board last year.
Multiple meetings have been held with Ministers to try to resolve the issues with use of and access to the land. An agreement has now been reached, and work is underway to make the land available. A market engagement process with nuclear and other clean energy developers will be launched this summer.

This Refugee Week 2025 (16 - 22 June) Cumbria Fostering is inviting you to find out more about opening your home to a child or young person seeking sanctuary at a free online event on Thursday 19 June.
This year’s theme - “Community as a Superpower” - shines a light on the small, everyday acts of care and kindness that build powerful support systems for those seeking safety.
At Cumbria Fostering, we see this superpower in action every day - in the homes of foster carers who open their doors to refugee children arriving alone, uncertain, and in need of protection.
To mark Refugee Week, Cumbria Fostering is hosting an open event for anyone curious about what it means to foster a separated child seeking asylum. You’ll hear real stories, get your questions answered, and learn how fostering fits into everyday life - with full training and support from day one.
-
Thursday 19 June – Join our online fostering information event from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and find out about fostering separated children seeking sanctuary during Refugee Week 2025. Work has been completed on street improvements in the heart of Whitehaven.
On Friday 13 June, the newly refurbished Green Market and Duke Street officially opened to be enjoyed by residents, visitors and local businesses.

An updated planning application for Millom’s Iron Line has been submitted and replaces the previous submission made in 2023.
It has been shaped by feedback from the local community, key stakeholders, and statutory consultees.
The revised plans improve protection to environmentally sensitive areas to the site and remain true to the original vision of creating an inspiring, accessible coastal route around the Hodbarrow Nature Reserve.
The Iron Line is a flagship project for the Millom Town Deal programme, which is investing more than £29 million Government and partners’ funding into the local area.
The Iron Line will transform the sea wall and surrounding landscape into a space that promotes walking, cycling, nature, and heritage.
We’re inviting residents, businesses, and local tradespeople to come along to an Iron Line community drop-in event.

There are just three weeks left to complete a survey which will give us vital insight into what local people want from the area’s Library Service.
The aim of our Fit for the Future project is to develop an understanding of what people want from our libraries, what is needed, and what we can deliver. Once we have this information, we will be able to make proposals on what our Library Service offer could be and how it can best be delivered.
We are set to begin construction on a new section of Carlisle’s cycling network - Route 38: the Cargo Link.
This vital infrastructure project will create a safer, more accessible route for cyclists, connecting Cargo to the Northern Bypass and supporting greener, healthier travel options.
Work is scheduled to start on Monday 16 June 2025 and is expected to take approximately 16 weeks, subject to weather conditions. Construction will take place Monday to Friday, 8.00am–4.00pm, in short 200-metre sections to help minimise disruption.
The road will remain open throughout, managed by temporary traffic lights, and access will be maintained for emergency services, public transport, and waste collections.
This scheme forms part of the Carlisle Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) and is funded by the Active Travel Fund 4, alongside contributions from Kingmoor Parish Council and Cycling Carlisle.

The way you apply for a postal vote has changed.
As part of the transition to the new system, existing postal voters who applied on the old system must re-apply for their postal vote before 31 January 2026.
The council’s Electoral Services team is contacting all affected postal voters. In May emails were sent to people where we hold an email address.
This week, we have written to those who did not respond to the email, and those where we don't have an email address. This letter will include a paper form to complete.
Before the expiry date, a reminder will be sent to all postal voters who have not completed a new application.
If no application is received by 31 January 2026, then your postal vote will be cancelled.
