Cumberland Council is proud to support the national Right to Grow campaign by introducing a community growing licence. This initiative will allow local communities to use Council-owned land for food growing projects.
We’re on the lookout for groups across Cumberland who are interested in setting up these community food growing initiatives. Let’s come together for a greener, healthier future.
Interested? Reach out and let us know where you want to grow.
We’re delighted to share that Cumbria’s community rail projects have received national recognition at the 2025 Community Rail Awards, bringing home two awards and a Silver — including one for the inspiring Beyond the Home initiative.
Beyond the Home was recognised for its powerful celebration of inclusion and creativity. Through storytelling, workshops, and vibrant public art, the project transformed everyday spaces into platforms for connection, imagination, and shared community pride. It brought people of all ages and backgrounds together to explore what “home” means beyond four walls — highlighting the diverse voices that make up our region.
This award is a reflection of the passion, collaboration, and dedication of everyone involved — from volunteers and artists to local partners and community members. Thank you for helping us bring this vision to life!

On the build-up to changes to waste collection arrangements in the former Allerdale area from week commencing 26 May, Cumberland Council is reminding residents to check their collection dates.
Due to the changes that are taking place over the coming months, the council is unable to provide an annual calendar and is asking residents to continue to check their website for collection information as some collections dates may change for a small number of residents.
As part of the bin request process, residents will be asked to provide an email address. If this is provided, the council will contact them to confirm the delivery date.
Householders may also be eligible for an even larger or extra bin if they have a large household, young children in nappies or your household produces extra waste due to medical needs. Find out if you qualify online.
Cardboard/paper collections will increase from monthly to fortnightly from September 2025.
The council has reviewed their collection service, and the changes provide a more efficient service.
Cumberland residents who want additional garden waste collections are also being urged to sign up soon as new collection arrangements are now in place.
All householders in the Cumberland area with garden waste bins continue to have one bin collected every fortnight.
There is now a yearly charge of £40 per additional garden waste bin that residents request to be collected. This is consistent with the approach in the former Copeland area.
Collections are fortnightly between March and November each year.
Residents can sign up to a maximum of three additional garden bin collections per fortnight, per household.
Stickers will be supplied for the additional bins once the payment has been processed. Residents are being advised to place the sticker on the back of the bin and when putting it out for collection, put the bin handle side to the road/pavement -this will help the collection crew and ensure that stickers are visible.

We’re really pleased to have welcomed our first group onto the 3G Pitch – the Millom Ironworks Walking Football Club.
There was a fantastic turnout, and it was brilliant to finally see this newly created community asset already being put to good use. Thanks to the club for sharing the photo below with us.
We can’t wait to see more clubs and groups using the new facilities in the weeks to come.
As part of the testing and commissioning required for the newly resurfaced 3G pitch at Millom School, some community groups are invited to use the all-weather pitch during the Easter holidays.
The pitch, funded via South Copeland GDF Community Partnership and facilitated via the Millom Town Deal will become an extremely important asset for the community.
The completion of the 3G pitch marks one of the first deliverables of the wider Millom Town Deal investment programme.
To celebrate its completion, taster sessions have been organised with partners in the community before it is officially opened following the Easter holidays when it will be made available to the general public for bookings.
The aim of these sessions is to provide exclusive access to a wide range of the community and obtain feedback to help develop the future booking offer.
Community taster session planned over the Easter break include:
• Workington RITC - Children’s holiday club.
• Millom Football Seniors.
• Haverigg Football Seniors.
• Millom Rugby League Seniors.
Following the Easter break future bookings will be facilitated by Millom School via a new contact email and webpage.

We’re pleased to share that plans for major improvements around Carlisle Station have been approved! A key part of the Carlisle Station Gateway project, these changes include the creation of a new public space called George Square, along with better connections to nearby areas like the Turkish Baths and James Street. The first phase will see new landscaping, a pedestrian crossing over Water Street, and surface car parking on the old Pools and Staples sites – making the area more welcoming and easier to get around on foot.
Later on, the remaining Station Retail Park will be removed to create more parking. The design will reflect Carlisle’s history, using brick, sandstone, and greenery to make the space more attractive and sustainable. Supported by £20 million from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, the £27 million project is set to kick off in autumn 2025 after nearby road upgrades are finished.
