'Expert Reading Instruction' Primary Reading Pedagogy Project 

Town End Research School 

As outlined in our previous WOW, a significant number of Primary, Infant and Junior schools have identified reading as a priority for improvement. In response to locally identified priorities, we have secured an evidence informed, high quality PD programme, specifically focused on this priority.

We encourage all WELL Primary schools that have reading within their school improvement plan to click HERE to find out more about this PD opportunity, which will be delivered by Town End Research School, including Stella Jones.

The training can include two members of staff attending three face-to-face sessions and engaging with the additional support/webinars/resources to be provided etc.

The programme will start on Friday 14th March and the dates for three sessions are as follows:

• Friday 14th March, Venue TBC
• Friday 2nd May, Venue TBC
• Thursday 5th June, Venue TBC

This PD programme will be limited to a maximum of 25 schools. To express an interest, please contact WELL@cumberland.gov.uk by Friday 24th January 2025.

If we do not receive sufficient expressions of interest for this programme, we will need to consider viability for this year.

The Independent Evaluation Report of WELL Year 3 (2023/24) from the University of Nottingham is now available on our website, please click HERE to view the report. 

The WELL team are now considering the recommendations through our next phase planning and will keep schools updated through WOW.

Spring Learning Community               

Thursday 30 January 15:30 - 17:00, Online

We are looking forward to seeing all our GTT schools at the Spring Great Teaching Toolkit Learning Community, which will take place on Thursday 30th January 15:30 - 17:00 via teams.

Your school's GTT Lead and at least one teacher focusing on Dimension 3 or 4 of the toolkit are required to attend.

We will be contacting all our GTT schools directly this week, with some preparation prompts from the Evidence Based Education team, required to maximise the use of the learning community session.

Additional Training Cohort Update

The Cumberland Educational Psychology team have confirmed they do not have capacity to put on any additional ELSA cohorts this academic year, after the Spring Term cohort starting at the end of February.

The WELL team are therefore exploring options to deliver another cohort this academic year and will keep you all updated through WOW.
