Our team at Foster With Us, our regional foster carer recruitment hub, is embarking on a campervan tour across Cumbria next week to raise awareness about fostering with your local authority.
The three-day ‘Cumbrian Campervan Adventure’ starts on Wednesday 13 November and offers those who are interested in fostering a chance to connect with our team at a series of drop-ins:

The three-day tour culminates in a charity walk at Loughrigg Fell, Ambleside on Friday 15 November, in aid of Children in Need. All are welcome to come along and join the six-mile ramble which starts at 10am. The meeting point is Rydal Road Car park, 1-3 Rydal Rd, Ambleside LA22 9AN and our team will be there from 9am to greet you.

A free festive fete will be held at Distington Walled Garden this Saturday (9 November), 10am - 4pm.
The event will include a variety of local businesses showcasing their crafts and an outdoor market. It will also include the opportunity for children to meet Father Christmas and get a small gift. An ensemble band will also provide festive tunes.
The café, based within the tranquil surroundings of the Distington Walled Garden, will open on the Saturday especially for the fete and its visitors. It will be open 10am - 2pm. Mince pies, shortbread and other festive food and drink will be available.

Christmas Memorial Services at Distington Hall Crematorium
We are inviting the community to attend our annual Christmas Memorial Services at Distington Hall Crematorium.
The services will be held on Wednesday 11 December and Thursday 12 December, starting at 6.30pm on both evenings.
As part of these services, an on-screen tribute will be displayed, featuring the names of those we wish to remember. If you would like to attend or have a loved one’s name included in the tribute, please call 01946 598305 or email distingtonhalladmin@cumberland.gov.uk.
Please note, the deadline for tribute submissions is Friday 29 November. Attendance is free of charge, but advanced booking is essential as spaces are limited.
Taste Cumbria Christmas is back in Cockermouth on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December and there’s a fabulous festive weekend in store.
From producers’ stalls packed with food, drink, crafts and homewares, to family entertainment including a visit from Santa, a snow globe, children’s book and film characters, and fairground rides, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Residents can also join us to discuss bus services at our next Border, Fellside and North Carlisle Community Panel event.
On November 26, from 6pm-8pm at Scotby Village Hall, we’ll be there with a cuppa, a chance to chat, and all the latest on buses in Cumberland.
You’ll be able to talk to your local councillors, and hear the latest plans for Cumberland’s bus services from our Infrastructure Planning Manager. There will also be a Q&A session afterwards.
The Border, Fellside and North Carlisle Community Panel covers the wards of Belah, Stanwix Urban, Longtown, Brampton, Houghton and Irthington, Corby and Hayton and Wetheral.

Improving your journey: Kingstown Road, Carlisle to get resurfaced
We will begin essential resurfacing works on the A7 Kingstown Road in Carlisle between Moorville Drive and Lowry Hill Road, starting Monday 18 November.
To carry out this resurfacing project, temporary two-way traffic lights will be installed on Kingstown Road, along with a road closure on Lowry Hill Road.
The work will commence on Monday 18 November and will continue for five days, weather permitting. Work will take place Monday to Friday, from 8.00am to 5.00pm, with no weekend work planned.

Overend Road in Whitehaven to get a revamp!
We will also begin resurfacing works on Overend Road in Whitehaven, starting Monday 11 November, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the local road network.
The resurfacing project will be conducted in two phases with a full road closure and is expected to last five days, weather permitting. Work will take place Monday to Friday, from 8.00am to 5.00pm, with no weekend work planned.

Love Maryport Living schemes complete
Sixteen empty properties have been brought back in to use in Maryport thanks to our Love Maryport Living initiative.
Work is now complete on all the upper floor accommodation, most of which had stood empty for many years. The aim of the Love Maryport Living project was to transform unoccupied spaces above shops encouraging more people to live, spend and socialise in the town, giving a boost to the local economy.
Carlisle Station Gateway Project on track
A planning application to redevelop and transform Carlisle’s Court Square has been submitted.
The plans are part of the ambitious Carlisle Station Gateway project.
With a substantial investment of £27million funded through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, this transformative project aims to rejuvenate Carlisle’s historic train station, enhance first impressions for visitors, and bolster connectivity across the Borderlands region.
Subject to planning approval, construction is anticipated to start in 2025, with an expected completion date of 2026/27.

It's been Occupational Therapy Week!
This is an annual event to raise awareness of the vital and important work of Occupational Therapists. Our brilliant team have created a video to explain more about the role of an Occupational Therapist, and how they support our residents in Cumberland.
The team have also been out in the community this week, speaking with schools and colleges about the role of an Occupational Therapist and how they can pursue a career in occupational therapy. They have also met with colleagues in occupational therapy in health organisations to discuss ways of working, best practice, and share learning.

A by-election has been called for the Christchurch ward of Cockermouth Town Council. The notice of election was published on Thursday 7 November with anyone wishing to stand needing to have their nominations in by 4pm on Friday, 15 November. Should the election be contested, polling day will be Thursday, 12 December.
A planning policy document that sets out how the former Copeland area of Cumbria could be developed in the future, has been adopted by Cumberland Council.
The Copeland Local Plan 2021-2039 has been developed over the past five years and already has undergone four main stages of public consultation between 2019 and 2022 before it was submitted to the Secretary of State for Public Examination.
Work is also underway on a Cumberland Local Plan. Once in place, this will supersede the Copeland Local Plan, other district Local Plans and the Cumbria Minerals and Waste Local Plan.
