Also in this week's edition:
During National Adoption Week (21 to 27 October), Cumbria Adoption has joined in the national ‘You Can Adopt’ campaign to increase understanding of modern adoption and show that ‘the journey to a family is not always a traditional one’.
The campaign highlights adoption journeys of all kinds, and the people who have played a role – from social workers and birth families, to foster carers and grandparents.
Cumbria Adoption welcomes adopters regardless of age, marital status, gender, sexuality, disability or employment status and in most cases the process takes 6-8 months. There is a particular need for adopters for children who tend to wait longest for a loving home, such as sibling groups, older children and children with additional or complex health needs.

Home to school travel policy
We are asking parents, carers, schools, and any interested resident or organisation to share their views in a public consultation on its proposed Home to School Travel Policy. The consultation, open from Monday 21 October to Monday 9 December aims to gather feedback on its proposals which aim to make school travel arrangements more flexible to meet the changing needs of children, service demands, and market pressures.

Make sure you are on the electoral register
Households in Cumberland that have not yet responded to the annual canvass – a process which seeks to make sure electoral registration details are up to date - may soon receive a visit from a council official.
Canvassers, who are employed by Cumberland Council, have begun knocking on doors across the area and will continue to do so until November 22nd.
Residents are being reminded that all canvassers will carry photo ID and will never enter any property. Responses will be recorded on a tablet device and if there is no response a further visit may be scheduled or a ‘calling card’ with further instructions will be posted.
The annual canvass takes place to keep the electoral register up to date and also helps identify any residents who are not registered, so that they can be given the opportunity to apply.
Letters, emails and text messages were sent to some residents last month with household visits now underway. Residents can still respond to any communications they’ve had via letter, text or email and if a response is received before a visit is due to take place, then the household will be removed from the list.

Sellafield boost for Maryport’s Carlton project
One of Maryport’s most prominent regeneration projects is really taking shape and has had a significant boost from Sellafield Ltd.
The former Carlton Cinema on Senhouse Street is being transformed into a cultural hub with a focus on the arts, music and theatre. It is part of the £12 million regeneration of Maryport which is being carried out by Cumberland Council. Initial funding was provided by the Government and now Sellafield Ltd has increased this with a grant of £350,000.
This will allow major changes to the interior of the ground floor auditorium to increase its capacity.
Building work on the project is already well underway.
A provisional completion date for the Sands Centre, Carlisle RAAC auditorium roof replacement has been revealed.
We are aiming to have the roof works completed by late spring 2025.
Keep an eye on thesandscentre.co.uk for events updates.
The leisure centre and pool at the Sands remain open to the public.

Following the successful re-launch of the inclusive cycling hub at CSA, Hensingham this summer, we are pleased to announce a third open event on Thursday 31 October between 10am and 12.15pm.
The event is made possible through the support of The Outdoor Partnership, Cyclewise, Cumbria Sports Academy, Wheels for All and some fantastic volunteers.
A range of adapted bikes will be available to offer the opportunity to try cycling on a safe, dedicated circuit and with support.
Booking in advance helps organisers ensure that they have a cycle and helmet for everyone taking part but is not essential. Bookings can be made via Eventbrite.
The inclusive cycling hub is part of the coastal programme funded by the UK Government’s Coastal Communities Fund and Sellafield Ltd’s Six Social Impact multiplied programme.
