National Safeguarding Adults Week 2024

Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board are supporting National Safeguarding Adults Week organised by the Ann Craft Trust. You can find out more about the themes for the the week, access information and resources on the Ann Craft Trust website.

During the week of action CSAB have a number of learning opportunties including our Annual Conference which all practitioners are invited to join.

Bias & Unconscious Bias: Malignant Alienation

We are pleased to confirm and offer a new and additional learning opportunity, during the week of action on Friday 22nd November 2024 12 noon - 1pm

The virtual lunch & learn session will provide an understanding of the term, Malignant Alienation and support participants to reflect and consider the impact on professional and client/patient relationship, that can lead to conscious and unconscious bias for practice.

Malignant alienation is a term that was coined by Morgan in 1979 (Watts & Morgan, 1994). It refers to the progressive deterioration of the therapeutic relationship, when a practitioner effectively starts to dislike the individual they are supporting. It is often accompanied by a reduction in the sympathy and level of support provided. It is so important in modern practice that as professionals, we realise that not only does our clients upbringing, beliefs, religion, culture, and social circles impact the way they see and engage people and professionals but also our own upbringing. Essentially, understanding how this can lead to a broken relationship between the client and professional and potentially worsen to the stage of malignant alienation.
