Voters go to the polls on Thursday 17 October for the elections to the seats of Keswick and Wetheral on Cumberland Council.
Postal voters are being reminded of recent changes to postal vote rules and we encourage you to use the pre-paid envelope provided and return it via Royal Mail.
Anyone returning a postal vote by hand to the Returning Officer, at the polling stations or designated council offices must complete a postal vote return form. A postal vote returned by hand that is not accompanied by a postal vote return form will be rejected.
In addition, there are new limits on the number of postal votes that can be handed in by one person. You can now only hand-in your own postal vote and the votes of up to five additional people. A postal vote return form must also be completed.
If you are voting in person on Thursday, don't forget to bring an eligible form of photo ID with you.

Highway works on the A5086 is continuing to take place:
-
Monday 14 October to Saturday 19 October: Phase 5 of the road improvement works will begin on Monday 14 October and is expected to finish by Saturday 19 October, with a road closure from the Frizington HWRC (the tip) to Kenmare Tyres, subject to weather conditions.
To mark Baby Loss Awareness Week (9 - 15 October), we’ve installed a white remembrance post box within the newly landscaped baby memorial area at Distington Hall Crematorium. This permanent addition allows family and friends to write letter, cards or messages to much-loved, missed babies.
Baby Loss Awareness Week, now in its 22nd year in the UK, brings us together to remember and honour babies lost during pregnancy or after birth. It’s a time to support bereaved families, raise awareness and work towards better care and prevention.
To commemorate the week, we have also lit some of our buildings pink and blue.
For support and further information go to Baby Loss Awareness Week – Break the silence around baby loss (babyloss-awareness.org)

Scam text messages regarding unpaid parking fines have been received by a number of Cumberland residents.
These messages have not been sent by Cumberland Council and are not legitimate.
Payments should only be made using your valid Penalty Charge Notice, which will have details on the reverse on how to pay.
Please check carefully before paying your parking fine and if you're unsure, call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk
To report a scam please call Scams Action - 0808 250 5050
QR codes
Scammers have also been reported to have placed fake pay by phone QR codes on ticket machines attempting to trick members of the public into using a fraudulent online platform to pay for their parking.
In Cumberland Council car parks the only digital payment option is called MiPermit - with the official app being downloadable from the Apple or Google Play stores or available via a web browser. There is an exception, at our Cecil Street car park in Carlisle which uses the flowbird service. Please only use these services (should you choose to pay digitally) and only follow instructions from permanent council signage. Customers can also pay by card and coin.
Using Mi-Permit is quick, easy and allows you control your stay from your phone. It is in operation at the vast majority of council sites.

Maryport Wellbeing Group completed a Dawn Walk for Samaritans this week to raise awareness of mental health issues and to raise money for Samaritans.
The team chose to take on the Dawn Walk, a 5km walk along Maryport Promenade, to show solidarity with those who are struggling with mental health problems, something which impacts a number of people across Cumberland and throughout the UK.
All members of the group were involved in the organisation of the event and played active roles in fundraising.
The money raised will be donated to Samaritans to aid their work in being there for people when they need them the most and to keep their helpline open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The team are still able to accept sponsorship for their Dawn Walk. Find out more here: https://dawnwalk.samaritans.org/fundraising/maryport-wellbeing-group
