Establishing Professional Boundaries
Welcome to Day 3 of National Safeguarding Adults Week for which the focus of today will be developing good quality relationships.
Developing good quality relationships are important across all organisations and communities. Professional boundaries help us to understand what good quality relationships look like both within and outside of work. Thinking about professional boundaries encourages us to establish clear foundations about the nature of working relationships from the outset.
On this day, practitioners are encouraged to think about what appropriate professional boundaries look like in their sector, organisation or community. What power imbalances exist that could impact professional working relationships? What could be the signs that professional boundaries are being blurred and how should you respond if you are concerned?
Professional boundaries can also go beyond our relationships with colleagues or service users and include boundaries between our work and home life. We will also be exploring what good practice looks like in transitioning from work to home life.
The Ann Craft Trust have a range of free resources connected to Safeguarding Adults Week, which you can access here.

Join our lunch & learn today - John's Story
Today Cumbria Safeguarding Adults Board (CSAB) is hosting an online ‘lunch & learn’ event for practitioners, called ‘John’s Story’ which will look at areas of good practice in relation to self-neglect.
John’s story illustrates how effectively practitioners from multi-agency working across a range of professional backgrounds, worked collaboratively to improve the outcomes for John.
John's story highlights good practice when working with adults who experience self-neglect and the impact of practitioner’s tenacity, professional curiosity and creativity ensuring making safeguarding personal with positive outcomes.

We recognise on occasions that practitioners from a range of professional backgrounds can face challenges working together to ensure the best outcomes for the adult.
Effective working together depends on an open and honest approach to relationships between agencies. Problem resolution is an integral part of professional co-operation in a multi-agency approach to safeguard adults. However, occasionally situations arise when staff within one agency feel that the actions, inaction or decisions of another agency do not adequately safeguard an adult at risk of abuse or neglect. Such situations have been highlighted in several Safeguarding Adult Reviews. CSAB have published multi-agency guidance defines the process for resolving such professional differences. You can read the guidance here.
Frontline staff and managers can be over-cautious about sharing personal information, particularly if it is against the wishes of the individual concerned. They may also be mistaken about needing hard evidence or consent to share information. The risk of sharing information is often perceived as higher than it actually is. It is important that staff consider the risks of not sharing safeguarding information when making decisions. This can often present challenges for professional relationships across disciplines where there is uncertainty about sharing information. You can read more in CSAB's Information Sharing Guidance which includes useful links and signposting to raise awareness about responsibilities to share information.
