Also in this week's edition:
More than 2,000 Scotch eggs, over 2,200 sausage rolls, three quarters of a tonne of Cumberland sausage, and 2,500 scones - just some of the crazy sales statistics from stallholders and town businesses combined after another fabulous Taste Cumbria festival in Cockermouth.
The streets were packed throughout Saturday and Sunday (28 and 29 September) as people ate, drank, shopped and listened to live music. There was some great family fun too, with a fairground, street entertainment and face painting, while some great community groups took the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for charity.
Taste Cumbria fun isn’t over for 2024. On Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November, the food festival is joining forces with Carlisle’s Fireshow, hosting a market in the Cathedral grounds then in December it’s time for festive food at the Taste Cumbria Christmas in Cockermouth on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8.

We joined Westmorland and Furness Council in confirming this week - in an Expression of Interest (EoI) to the UK Government - our commitment to exploring devolution for their areas.
Our joint submission said: “We recognise the opportunity presented by the Government’s devolution agenda to help drive forward inclusive and sustainable economic growth and are agreed that this expression of interest seeks to build on the existing working relationship on the Cumbria geographic footprint. This reflects our shared history and areas of strategic interest, as well as the reality of current devolution arrangements in our neighbouring geographies.”

A6 London Road, Carlisle
Carriageway improvement works are set to begin on A6 London Road, Carlisle, next week as part of Cumberland Council's ongoing efforts to enhance the local road network.
Resurfacing of London Road will take place between Eastern Way and Harraby Green Road, Carlisle starting on Monday 7 October, for seven working days, weather permitting. Work will be carried out from 8.00am to 5.00pm each day, excluding weekends.
To ensure the safety of all road users, a one-way system will be implemented during working hours, directing traffic out of Carlisle. While access to junctions may be restricted during the improvement works, traffic marshals will be on-site to assist with entry to properties and businesses. Please note that some minor delays are expected, but access for emergency services will remain in place at all times.
Cumberland Council would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation as these important road improvements take place and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
For further information, residents and businesses can report online via our website or contact the Highways Hotline at 0300 373 3736.
To coincide with International Day for Older People on 1 October 2024, we announced the formation of a dedicated Age Friendly Board to support our services for residents aged 50 and over. This important initiative marks a key step in the council's efforts to create an Age Friendly Cumberland, a place where older people can live healthy, active, and fulfilling lives.
Underpinning the board are two newly established Age Friendly Partnership Groups—one serving Carlisle and the other serving south and west Cumberland. These groups will work closely with the Age Friendly Board to drive forward initiatives and actions that promote inclusivity and support for older residents.
We also joined Age UK highlighting the importance of organisations becoming age-friendly employers and businesses, promoting practices that welcome and support older employees and customers alike. As the population ages, it is increasingly vital for businesses and organisations to adopt age-friendly practices that meet the needs of older employees and customers. A number of businesses, organisations and community centres have already signed up to the scheme and the council is keen for others to join them.
