Petteril Community Panel has invested almost £93,000 into exciting local projects.
The panel, which invests money locally on behalf of Cumberland Council, met this week to support ten projects. They range from outdoor play events and sound meditation sessions to CCTV, a family hub and access to healthy food.
The investments saw the Parish of St Elisabeth awarded £1,692 towards installing CCTV at St Elisabeth Church in Carlisle. It’s hoped the external cameras will deter crime and help keep the area safe and clean. The award covers around half the cost, the rest being covered by the church. The iCan Wellbeing Group Community Interest Organisation received a £3,840 investment towards extending meditation and sound healing sessions.

A community’s dreams are coming together in Maryport where a new skate park is about to be built, with work starting week commencing 9 September.
Construction experts Bendcrete Leisure Limited have been appointed to build a new skatepark along the Promenade. It will be located to the south of what is currently a disused toilet block but which is destined to become a new café.
Bendcrete is designing the new site using a wish list from the town’s skating and BMX-riding communities which includes ramps, ledges, boxes and rails. The ‘Skatepark for Maryport’ panel of local people of all ages was set up so their knowledge of skating and biking could decide the priorities for the new facility.
This is a fully funded standalone scheme but has been designed to allow for future expansion. The materials used, mainly reinforced concrete for the skating surfaces and robust steel seating, will be chosen to withstand the coastal environment.
...and work is continuing in Carlisle too
There is some upcoming tree maintenance and bench removal work being carried out in Carlisle's Market Square and Greenmarket.
The goal is to transform it into a vibrant destination for both residents and visitors, featuring a multifunctional events space for various activities and gatherings.
In the area that the war memorial will be moved to, two smaller trees will be carefully removed to facilitate the relocation. The repositioning of the war memorial is fully supported by the British Legion. Detailed surveys have shown that these trees are affected by Ash Dieback. The council emphasises that tree removal is a last resort, carried out only when trees are dead, dying, diseased, or pose a safety hazard. To improve the local environment, four new trees will be planted.
Benches in the Greenmarket area will also be removed, with memorial nameplates carefully stored and preserved to be added to new benches when they are installed.

Second Hand September is a campaign that promotes donating, reusing, re-wearing and restyling your clothes during September – and beyond!
Have you thought about what you already have in your wardrobe? Research shows that a quarter (26%, WRAP 2022) of our clothes haven’t been worn in the past year, but we still buy more. On average there are 118 items of clothing in our wardrobes, you may find items you can’t fit into anymore or items you simply don’t want to keep any longer.
A new campaign by the charity Hubbub is challenging people to count their clothes and rediscover fresh fits in their wardrobe. Why not take the challenge at www.hubbub.org.uk/off-the-hanger Use the Off The Hanger counter to find out how much you own, how much you’ve spent and get a personalised reading of your collection of clothes. Doing the count could save you money, help you fall back in love with your wardrobe and rediscover hidden gems. You could donate the ones that you don’t want to a charity shop or make a bit of money by selling through one of the many pre-loved clothing apps for example Vinted.
Buying second hand is becoming increasingly popular and keeps clothes in use for longer. During Second Hand September thousands of people shop only second hand for 30 days (or more!) to help people and the planet. Why not give it a try? You could find something unique, and bag yourself a bargain!
Charity shops are replenished by donations all the time so it’s worthwhile popping in on a regular basis. You may not find something every time you go in but that’s what makes it feel like you’ve struck gold when you do find something.
