From a Roman watchtower and a Northern Lights display, to loads of seaside wildlife and some shipbuilding games - the new adventure play area at Maryport Activity Centre has been revealed.
Playtime experts The Soft Brick Company were commissioned to design the exciting new attraction, which is aimed at smaller children. It will be built inside the former theatre space of the harbourside venue, which used to be called the Wave. The building is currently undergoing a major refurbishment as part of the £12 million regeneration of Maryport.
The play park designers have taken their inspiration from Maryport’s coastal location and wildlife, picturesque harbour and Roman history.

Designs are being finalised for the £2.1 million transformation of key areas of Workington town centre.
The project will include areas of Murray Road, Upton Street and Central Way and will provide around 2,100 square meters of improved public space.
The scheme’s design is due to be finalised in September, with the contract with Flimby-based Thomas Armstrong Ltd being signed off at the end of that month. Work is scheduled to begin early in the new year. It is anticipated that any road closures will be required in the early Spring and these will be publicised closer to the time as the project timeline is confirmed.
The full programme of work should take 10 months to complete, with the new and improved areas fully reopened by Autumn 2025. It will complement other improvements taking place, like the Workington Gateway project at Ramsay Brow, Hall Brow and Hall Park.

Shops in Workington, Silloth and Maryport have been praised following a test purchasing operation organised by Cumberland Council.
Cumberland Council’s Trading Standards service carried out the operation on Tuesday 20 August in Workington and Wednesday 28 August in Silloth and Maryport in their latest crackdown on the sale of cigarettes and vapes to minors.
The exercise aimed to ensure local businesses in Cumberland were complying with legislation and that those under the age of 18 are unable to purchase cigarettes and nicotine containing vapes.
The operation saw all 17 of the retail premises visited challenge the underaged volunteers for identification before refusing the sale.
There are strict laws on the sale of cigarettes and nicotine vaping products, and it is a criminal offence to sell them to persons under the age of 18 years or purchase them on their behalf.
Traders found to be breaking these rules risk being prosecuted and fined up to £2,500.
We have been awarded a share of £317k to provide free cardiovascular checks to employees in their workplace.
The government announced on Friday 30 August that the council has been successful in its bid with Westmorland and Furness Council to be part of the pilot project.
The council will now be working with its partner, Cumbria Health, to roll-out the checks to as many workplaces as possible across Cumberland.
