Students across Cumberland have received their A-Level results this week. The overall A-Level performance of students in Cumberland is beginning to emerge with results showing an improvement to those recorded last year.

We’re thrilled to announce the rollout of significant upgrades to our bus network this autumn, aimed at making travel more sustainable and convenient for everyone in Cumberland.
As part of the first phase of our Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), we’ve collaborated with local members, bus operators, and stakeholders to revamp and expand our bus services. Partnering with Stagecoach, we’re set to deliver a more reliable and accessible network that truly connects our communities.
Starting this autumn, we’ll implement the following enhancements:
-
Route 60: Silloth - Maryport: Reintroducing this key service.
-
Route 101: Rockcliffe - Durdar: Restoring and improving this route.
-
Route 300: Workington - Carlisle: Increased frequency with buses every 30 minutes.
-
Route 57: Maryport - Dearham - Broughton Moor - Workington: A new service based on community feedback.
-
Route 30: Egremont/Frizington - Maryport - Sunday: Services will now run every 30 minutes.
-
Route M1: Millom Town Service - including Haverigg: Strengthening community connections.
-
Route 22: Cleator Moor - Cleator - Whitehaven Hospital: This route will provide dependable transport to essential services, with a special focus on accommodating passengers with mobility needs. We’re committed to enhancing access, including extended visitor hours at the hospital, ensuring everyone benefits from reliable and inclusive transportation.
We are delighted to work with Lamplugh, Arlecdon & Frizington and Dean Parish Councils so that the Route 217, which is for Frizington - Lamplugh - Dean – Cockermouth can be extended until March 2025 (previously Parish Council funding had only been granted until 18 September 2024).
Thanks to £2.4 million in funding from the Department for Transport under BSIP, we’re excited to bring these improvements to Cumberland’s bus services.

A planning application has been submitted to improve the Oldside site at the Port of Workington ahead of future development.
We are managing the project which aims to use the location to create a clean energy and logistics hub. Around £4.5 million of funding is being provided by the Government as part of the Workington Town Deal.
To enable this to happen, the former Henry Curwen pub at Ramsay Brow will be demolished. Work has started inside the building.
Removing the building will ease the pinch point where the A66 and A596 meet, improving access for HGVs and reducing traffic impacts on nearby communities. The demolition is a critical part of the £10 million Workington Gateway project, which will also enhance pedestrian and cycle routes around Hall Park, add a new horticultural centre and café, and feature a lighting scheme for the historic hall.
Workington Gateway is part of a larger regeneration effort fuelled by £33 million in external funding, which also includes a Sports Village, Innovation Centre, and public realm improvements.
Do you love Curwen Hall and Hall Park in Workington? Have you been visiting since you were a child?
As part of the Workington Gateway project, we will be improving ‘active travel’ footpaths and cycle paths in and around Hall Park. We’re interested in how you use the park now, and how you have done so in the past.
Have your say by filling in an online survey. Please respond before Friday 30 August 2024.
If you have any questions about the project, please email WorkingtonTownscape@cumbria.gov.uk
If you currently supply goods, works or services to the council, or hope to do so in the future, then you need to know about the forthcoming changes.
In October a new Procurement Act will come into force that will benefit suppliers of all sizes, but particularly start-ups, scale-ups and small businesses.
Some of the benefits are:
- There will be a central digital platform for all suppliers to register and store their details on so that they can be used for multiple bids, and see all opportunities, from all public sector organisations, in one place.
- Simplified bidding processes will make it easier to bid, negotiate and work in partnership with the public sector.
- Commercial frameworks will be more flexible, so prospective suppliers are not shut out for long periods of time.
- The Act will remove bureaucratic barriers and level the playing field for smaller businesses so they can compete for more contracts.
- There will be prompt payment for more businesses in public sector supply chains.
- And a stronger exclusions framework will take tougher action on underperforming suppliers.
- Buyers will have to consider the barriers facing smaller businesses and that obstacles will be removed around provision of accounts and insurance at the bidding stage.
These changes will drive innovation, deliver better outcomes and embed transparency right through the commercial lifecycle, so everyone can access procurement data and see how money is spent.
To learn more please watch the supplier knowledge drops on the UK Government website.
We will be updating our webpages over the forthcoming months to give you further advice and guidance on the new Act on doing business with the council.
