What's new this week?
|
We've gone global!
Over the last two weeks, WELL has featured at the ICSEI (International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement) in Dublin and the National Institute for Education (NIE) in Singapore.
The seminars had a specific focus on the work of WELL and west Cumbria's school leaders to develop evidence informed practice at scale. A key message arising from our learning is the importance of finding the sweet spot between purism and pragmatism.

WELL Leadership Action Research
The best schools are the best at getting better!
A key ambition for WELL is to support our schools to confidently use research and rich evidence to evaluate your work.
We have Professor Philippa Cordingley and Bartholomew Crisp, two of the leading experts in the field of Action Research who will be delivering a high quality programme over the next two terms. Based on our own evaluation, we are excited about the practical nature of this programme. Participants will not only have access to three quality sessions, you will also have access to a practical handbook. Participation will enable you to collaborate and to effectively evaluate progress against key issues in your school.
Sign up here for three action research sessions over the Spring and Summer terms.

Opportunity for Primary Schools
Through our relationship with high quality partners, we have been made aware of a research project focused on improving vocabulary and reading comprehension outcomes for targeted Year 3 and 4 pupils due to take place during 2024-26 academic years.
Queens University Belfast are looking for schools interested to take part in this project. The project has been funded by the Nuffield Foundation. Participating schools would need to have at least 4 pupils in each of Yr3 and Yr4 and have above the national average level for FSM.
More info can be found here. It would be brilliant to have a WELL cohort of schools taking part!

Sellafield Visit to WELL School
Last week, two of our WELL Headteachers welcomed a number of Sellafield Ltd social impact colleagues, including the Head of Sustainability, to Valley Primary School and Nursery.
Together, St Begh's Catholic Junior School and Valley Primary schools, ensured that Sellafield Ltd officials saw and heard at first hand the difference that schools in west Cumbria make to our pupils. Feedback from the Sellafield team has been that, the visit was inspirational and we are grateful for the excellent work of both schools, representing the wider WELL family of schools.

'Evaluating Your Impact' Workshops
Thank you for your excellent discussions, honesty and reflections during our recent round of workshops. It is really clear to see how much thought is going into your planning and how this is impacting on your work in schools. It is a real honour and privilege to be part of those sessions and see how many of you are using your experiences to guide your thinking and help guide and support the work of others.
Patty and I will be writing a short evaluation survey that we will send out to you via WOW later this term. This will help us to get your feedback on the work we have done with you over the past two years in order to help us make improvements for next year.

ERA Advisory Board
We had our first meeting of the ERA Advisory Board in Sunderland last week at the Evidence Based Education offices with Prof Dr Stuart Kime and Kate Horton, regional lead for the EEF.
This meeting gave us time to really think about the role of ERA in our region and what success will look like for us supporting schools to use evidence based approaches. We are being challenged in this group to ensure that our work is well thought through and considered. We are meeting next week to write our Theory of change and will share this with you when completed.

Question to Consider...
Following on from your 'evaluating your impact' workshops, this week's question to consider is:
"Which evaluation tools and assessment methods are we using in school and how will we share this in a way that supports our improvement journey and the evaluation of WELL?"
