LASL Meeting & Cluster Opportunity
Dale really enjoyed the opportunity to attend the West LASL meeting on 11th January.
As you will know, one of the aims of the WELL project is to enable the development of an outward facing and collaborative school system in west Cumbria.
To help evaluate the impact of WELL in this area, school leaders were asked as part of the summer 2023 WELL evaluation survey to share which schools within the districts formerly known as Allerdale and Copeland they draw support from to assist their school improvement efforts.
At the recent LASL meeting, these findings were explored by members of the WELL evaluation research team (Professor Toby Greany and Dr Tom Cowhitt). During the meeting they explained how these network diagrams can inform thinking and support the development of more sophisticated work on school improvement across clusters.
WELL has secured the capacity of Toby and Tom to work with two or three clusters to support your school improvement collaboration development this year.
This will take the form of a 2-hour workshop with cluster headteachers to include:
- Introduction to Social Network Analysis, relational data, and the wider research on leadership of educational networks.
- Deep dive into the relational data of your cluster.
- Explore how to develop a more cohesive inter-school network to support a more collaborative and outward facing cluster.
If you would like your cluster to be considered, please email WELL@cumberland.gov.uk

WOW - Moving to Every Fortnight
Thank you for your feedback and continued engagement with WOW. From this Wednesday we will be trailling circulating this newsletter, WOW - 'WELL on Wednesdays' to every other Wednesday.
The next WOW will be sent on Wednesday 31st January.
WOW was created for our family of schools to ensure key WELL updates are shared in a single communication as much as this is possible, because we know how many emails are received by schools. For schools/individuals engaged in some specific WELL elements, we do need to occasionally send communications that are directly relevant to you. We will monitor the impact of a fortnightly approach on WOW read rates and review again later in the year. If the fortnightly WOW hasn't been opened or read, it will be sent again to you the following Wednesday as a second opportunity to read it.
Please let us know if this format has improved WOW communications or send any comments or feedback - WELL@cumberland.gov.uk.
If you would like to add any colleagues to WOW's distribution list, to ensure WOW is reaching further into your school - please add their email addresses to our newsletter sign-up page.

'Evaluating Your Impact' Workshops
Thank you to the 45 schools who attended yesterday's 'Evaluating your Impact' workshops, despite the snowy weather. We are looking forward to working with the remaining schools over the next couple of weeks.
These workshops consider how we show impact of the work we are carrying out in school. It will be great to catch up with you all on the 18th and 24th January, and see how your plans are progressing and share the ups and downs with each other.
Please bring your implementation plans with you to these workshops.

ERA Advisory Board
We are soon to have our first ERA Advisory Board meeting. We will be meeting with Dale, Stuart Kime from Evidence Based Education, Kate Horton from the EEF and Marc Rowland from Unity Research School to look at the best ways forward for ERA to support your work in schools.
The Board will be sharing their experiences and expertise with us as we navigate a way to provide the most cohesive and effective CPD for our region going forward. This is a really exciting opportunity for us to learn from experts in their fields and link that expertise to our local priorities. We’ll share with you the outcomes of that meeting in the next WOW.

Cumberland Maths Plan
We are really pleased to be working with Cumberland Council on their region-wide Maths action plan. Our work is part of a much bigger range of provision over the next 2 years supporting Maths leaders in schools.
We will be focusing on effective implementation and supporting Maths leaders to understand the principles of the process as well as supporting them on plans for their schools over the next 18 months. Work on this will start in the summer term so look out for more information.
We will soon be meeting with the Cumbria Maths Partnership to find out what great work has already taken place and how our PD can sit most effectively alongside the other elements within the plan so that support for your Maths leaders is delivered in the most effective way.

Metacognition & Self-Regulated Learning
We are looking forward to working with our current cohort of schools focusing on this priority for Day 2 of our 3 day course:
Whitehaven Golf Club on 20th February.
We had a great time back in November on Day 1 of the training, as we found out more about the terminology and began to think about what this might look like in our schools. Day 2 will start to look in more detail at the strategies we can use in the classroom to support learning.

In the pipeline...
We are discussing possible future work with ImpactEd to help us look at how we can provide support for schools to monitor and assess the impact of their work.
Initial discussions are currently taking place based on the feedback we have received from you in previous meetings around the pressures of monitoring and evaluation of programmes and interventions.
We are also linking with MITA (Maximising the Impact of Teaching Assistants) to look at possible programmes of support for schools who would like to focus on their deployment and impact of support staff.
More on these two pieces of work will follow!
If there is anything you would like ERA to help you with, then please don’t hesitate to contact Patty or Sue via email:

Question to Consider...
The independent evaluation of WELL provides evidence that more and more WELL schools are developing sophisticated approached to embedding evidence in school improvement planning.
To further support you, we will be offering a question in each WOW to promote reflection and discussion as a leadership team.
This week's question:
'How are leaders and teachers responsible for end of key stage assessments using research and the implementation process to support and prepare pupils for assessments/ exams?'
