WELL Leadership Action Research
The best schools are the best at getting better!
A key ambition for WELL is to support our schools to confidently use research and rich evidence to evaluate your work.
We have Professor Philippa Cordingley and Bartholomew Crisp, two of the leading experts in the field of Action Research who will be delivering a high quality programme over the next two terms. Based on our own evaluation, we are excited about the practical nature of this programme. Participants will not only have access to three quality sessions, you will also have access to a practical handbook. Participation will enable you to collaborate and to effectively evaluate progress against key issues in your school.

Grant Funding
We will be sending direct communication to the 19 schools currently delivering Cumbrian Award, outlining details of a grant to support you this year.
We have also re-developed the pupil's workbooks for each strand and will share these with you before the end of term. For this year you will have the option of using your own workbooks that may already have been started, or adopting ours.

Being an Evidence Informed Governor Workshop
Yesterday evening, ERA welcomed 18 governors to our workshop. The conversation within the group was excellent and the dedication of those attending was clear to see.

Evidence and Research Informed Training Opportunities
Through our partnerships with the EEF Research School network, we are pleased to share two primary literacy training opportunities:
- Primary Literacy Twilight Series
- A Spotlight on Readers Theatre
These are being offered by Town End Research School, at a small cost. If literacy is one of your school's priorities, you could utilise some of your WELL grant to fund these training opportunities.

Keynotes and Workshop Overviews
We are finalising plans and content for MADE 2024 and looking forward to welcoming the significant number of you that are signed up. Details of the full programme and how to express workshop preferences will be circulated in early January.
As an update to previous WOWs, here are some further examples of the quality attendees will experience:
Professor Rob Coe (EBE) Keynote: Getting better together: Supporting and Nurturing Great Teachers
Overview: There is abundant evidence that, of all the things schools can influence, “what teachers know, do, and care about” (Hattie, 2003) has the biggest impact on pupil outcomes, by some margin, and that high-quality teaching narrows the attainment gap. High-quality teaching is not a fixed or given quantity: it varies across classrooms and can be learnt, supported and nurtured.
The environment in which teachers work and the leadership they experience can affect the quality of teaching pupils' experience. But what does the evidence say about these factors? And how can we use that evidence to elevate school environments and leadership practices to help teachers be the best versions of their professional selves? In this keynote, Prof Rob Coe will answer these questions.
Professor Stuart Kime (EBE) Workshop: Promoting learner motivation: Strategies to adapt and try in your classroom
Overview: Pupils who feel more motivated to learn are more likely to do so. But what can teachers do to enhance learner motivation? In the workshop, Prof Stuart Kime will answer this question, showing how evidence summarised in ‘Self-determination theory’ can be used as the basis for practical strategies that any teacher could select, adapt, and use in their classroom. Specifically, Stuart will talk about how teachers can help their learners develop feelings of competence, autonomy and relatedness.
C.J Rauch (EBE) Workshop : Activating Hard Thinking: how to make learning stick
Overview: Join C.J. Rauch, Head of teaching and learning at Evidence Based Education, in a focused session exploring practical techniques to help pupils retain and use knowledge effectively. This workshop delves into the concept of 'overlearning', guiding you through the transition from directed teaching to fostering pupils independence. You’ll gain insights into effective methods like spacing, interleaving, varying practice conditions, elaboration, and self-explanation.
This session is designed for teachers looking to understand and apply these principles in their classrooms. It's an opportunity to enhance your own teaching toolkit with techniques informed by educational research, suitable for all teachers.
Louise Quinn Workshops:
We are delighted to announce that Louise Quinn, Director of Shotton Hall Research School and advisor to the EEF's 'Improving Literacy in Secondary Schools' will also be joining us to lead to highly practical workshops that support our regions' identified priorities. These will include:
- A tiered reading strategy in schools
- Assessment not assumption: The role of diagnostic assessment in reading interventions
- Leading targeted interventions in secondary school

Active Ingredients for RR
We currently have 22 WELL schools implementing Reciprocal reading as part of their implementation process.
This week we welcomed another 8 schools to undertake this training with Andy Taylor from FFT, who continues to be a great supporter of Western schools and WELL.
One of the aims of WELL is for us all to share the "Active Ingredients" (left hand column of implementation plans), that gives programmes and interventions the best bet for success and impact on pupil achievement. The evidence from research, identifies the following as important features seen during the highest quality RR lessons. We hope you find them useful.
WELL is interested to see if these align with what you are seeing in the classroom, we would welcome any feedback on these and other key ingredients that you have identified to be most effective.
Implementation:
- Reciprocal reading lessons will be timetabled and protected
- Lessons will take place in an appropriate base/ venue
- Screening to ensure the right pupils have been targeted for reciprocal reading
- All participating pupils to receive two sessions a week for at least 12 weeks
- Sufficient copies of the high quality texts, dictionaries and atlases will be available
- Vocabulary of Reciprocal Reading is evident in displays
- Use complete short stories, complete chapters from short novels, complete poems, coherent sections from information texts and longer texts planned for in sequence
- A balance between fiction and non-fiction texts
- Monitor pupil application of Reciprocal Reading strategies independently and in other lessons
During sessions/lessons:
- Sessions introduced by a recapping activity
- Text is split into 3 or 4 sections to encourage repetition of the 4 strategies
- All 4 reciprocal reading strategies (predict, clarify, question, summarise) used on every section of text
- Sessions conclude with a recap or review of what has been read
- Adults able to join in with the group without dominating the activity
- All pupils contribute and support is given for those who are less confident
- Adult partner and/or teacher model the strategies
- Sessions encourage pupils to undertake follow up reading or research

WELL are excited to announce a new professional development opportunity for all fully trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) who are currently working in Cumberland and access supervision.
With Sheila Burton, Educational Psychologist, and creator of ELSA training, as key note speaker. There will be a variety of Cumberland Council Educational Psychologist led workshops. This is an exciting opportunity for all ELSAs in the Summer term.
