One judge commented that: “This project clearly demonstrates the benefits of engaging volunteers with archaeological excavation and museum based post-ex. It is a clear model for how to utilise such archaeological and museum resources to carefully engage with the local, and often hard to reach, communities, and instil elements of pride in local heritage.”
The Uncovering Roman Carlisle is an ongoing programme of community archaeological investigation, exhibitions, and engagement exploring Carlisle’s Roman remains.
The project is delivered by a partnership of Cumberland Council, Carlisle Cricket Club, Tullie, and Wardell Armstrong Archaeology.

A planning application to update and revitalise Maryport’s Wave Centre has been approved.
Work can now start on the prominent building, boosting facilities for locals and visitors of all ages. It’s part of a multi-million pound investment project which aims to revitalise the town’s high street, harbourside and promenade.
A new adventure play centre for young children, improvements to the Clip n’ Climb attraction, new multipurpose studio spaces, a community meeting space, party rooms and a better gymnasium will all now be created. Outside there will be a new bike hub, along with more attractive landscaping. The entrance area will be improved and staff offices moved upstairs to free up space on the ground floor to make space for these new facilities.
A new Banking Hub is now open in Maryport and it’s had a huge impact on the high street.
The façade of the Senhouse Street building was renovated as part of our Shop Front Scheme, funded by Historic England’s Heritage Action Zone programme.
Workington-based Stobbarts Ltd carried out the work, and they’re also creating three new apartments above on behalf of the building’s owner. That’s part of our Love Maryport Living project which has been made possible by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund. This initiative is restoring 16 empty spaces above shops to create more accommodation and give an additional boost to the town centre.
Find out more about both schemes here, along with our huge programme of regeneration work taking place in Maryport.
Maryport’s Banking Hub offers a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks and building societies can carry out regular cash transactions.
It also offers a Community Banker service where customers can talk to their own banking provider about more complicated issues, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Community Bankers work on rotation, with a different bank or building society available each day:
-
Monday: NatWest
-
Tuesday: HSBC
-
Wednesday: Halifax
-
Thursday: TSB
-
Friday: Barclays

If you buy the weekly food shop for your household, please complete this short, anonymous survey. By taking part, you will be helping us understand where support needs to be directed - and as a thank you, you have the chance to win a gift voucher of up to £100.
Cumberland Council is pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative called “Fresh Start”, aimed at providing essential cleaning products to young people aged 16–24 with lived experience of homelessness transitioning to independent living as they move into a new property.
Recognising the hurdles young people face, the Youth Homeless & Housing team identified a gap in support. To address this, they worked with the Focus Family team to partner with the Geoff Brown Charitable Trust who generously donated £600 worth of cleaning products and ASDA who donated £50. This donation will ensure that young people embarking on their tenancies receive the essential items they need to start their new chapter with confidence and dignity.
The Youth Homeless & Housing team is dedicated to assisting young adults during one of the most challenging periods of their lives. Many of these young people find themselves navigating the complexities of independent living due to strained family relationships or transitioning from supported accommodation to their first home.
