Effective Pupil Premium Strategies:
"A School with a View" with Marc Rowland
As promised in last week's WOW, below is an outline of intended next steps, including the opportunity for collaboration with Marc Rowland and his team:
1. A Call for Evidence. If you are interested and willing to celebrate strengths of your Pupil Premium (PP) practice in West Cumbria, Marc and ERA would love to hear about it. Please email WELL@cumberland.gov.uk by Friday 15th December, because we would like us to have a conversation with you.
2. In-person Disadvantage Reviews. Marc and two of his experienced colleagues are working with WELL/ ERA to implement a programme of PP audit, development and review with up to 25 WELL schools this academic year.
A number of schools will be invited to take part and there is an opportunity for all schools to express an interest. If you are interested in being involved this academic year, please email WELL@cumberland.gov.uk by Friday 24th November, briefly outlining why you would like to take part in this opportunity at this stage. If demand outweighs our capacity for this year, we will be exploring the potential to expand the reach further in 2024 - 2025.
3. Using outcomes of the call for evidence, learning from in-school reviews and leadership surveys, we will map high quality practice and develop a disadvantage handbook and resource bank for our schools in our context. This will take place from Spring through to Summer 2024.
4. Roll out a disadvantage framework that can be used by all schools, building local expertise and centres of effective practice in the region. This will take from from Summer through to Autumn 2024.
5. Responding to your feedback and our impact evaluation. Through the ERA advisory board, we will be embedding partnerships with national expertise and local system leaders and ensuring local leaders of high quality training in relation to PP strategy. This will take from from Summer 2024 through to Summer 2025.

EEF Evidence into Action Podcast: Defining Disadvantage
In addition to bringing high quality to West Cumbria, another ambition of ERA is to sift through the latest research in education and sign post to useful and relevant resources and reading for priorities in our region.
This link provides a useful podcast in 'Defining Disadvantage' and features Marc Rowland, Pupil Premium advisor.
Metacognition and Self-Regulated Learning Programme
Tuesday 21 November 09:30 - 15:30, Whitehaven Golf Club
Next week, the start of a three-day metacognition and self-regulated learning programme begins on Tuesday 21st November 09:30 - 15:30, Whitehaven Golf Club, delivered by ERA.
This three-day course will bring some clarity and guidance to an area of teaching and learning that holds so much promise but can be difficult to implement. Based on the EEF Guidance Report and cutting-edge evidence, delegates will explore what metacognition is, how to teach metacognitive skills and create effective learners and produce an action plan to implement their learning into a whole school strategy.
There are a very limited number of places still available, book now with the School Development Team.

EEF Early Years Maths and Literacy Evidence
The EEF has added two brand new themes to it's Early Years Evidence Store focusing on early Maths and early Literacy.
The new additions are designed to support early years staff to strengthen their practice and boost learning and development. Each theme summarises evidence-informed approaches and illustrates how they could be put into practice with children in all types of early years settings.
WELL Schools can access them here.

Speech and Language Toolkit
As powerfully outlined by Marc at our recent workshops and from feedback from so many of our WELL Schools, the importance of speech, language and vocabulary development is greater than ever.
The schools may find the attached link helpful to inform your thinking and consideration of resources, schools could use their PP funding and/or some of their WELL grant to access this resource if a priority for your school.

Community Meeting
The first community meeting for this programme is this Thursday - 16th November 15:35 - 16:35. Last week, you will have received an invite link to the online community. Please email WELL@cumberland.gov.uk if you would like this to be resent to you.
The Community meeting is a chance to share experiences since the Day 1 training and begin to identify any issues etc. The meeting is open to all, but is specially relevant to the teacher – leader/ coordinator. Please be prepared to share updates on your progress with the community group.
Day 2 Training
Looking forward to seeing all the participating schools again at Energus on 22 November 09:00 -15:00 for Day 2 of this initiative, launched in July.
Andy has asked if all colleagues attending could please bring 2 or 3 example texts that you use with your students. These can be the same as those brought to Day 1 and texts that you’ve already used with your class. They could also be texts you plan to use or are thinking about using. Ideally, at least one of the texts will be a new text, as they will be used in an activity on the day.
