This year will focus on how you can prioritise the welfare and wellbeing of yourself and others.  

There’s a strong link between safeguarding and mental and physical wellbeing. If someone’s wellbeing is suffering, they may consider certain actions that put them at risk. Wellbeing includes our mental and physical health, our relationships, our connection with our communities and our contribution to society. Being able to live free from abuse and neglect is a key element of wellbeing.

Any actions taken to safeguard an adult must take their whole wellbeing into account and be proportionate to the risk of harm.  Practitioners should work with people to understand what matters to them and consider their beliefs, views and feelings when offering support.

This year's theme encourages you to think about what wellbeing means to you and what this means for the people you support during Safeguarding Adults Week 2023. Themes have been selected for each day of the week, to enhance knowledge and understanding of safeguarding adults within your organisation and communities.  There will be daily briefings published sharing information and useful resources.

It’s important we look out for yourself and others. 

During the week we will be offerring you the opportunity to join us for one of our lunch a learn sessions.  These are targetted at a wide range of audiences, including staff, practitioners, members of the public and local communities to support our efforts to raise awareness of what safeguarding adults is and make safeguarding everybody's business.

We recognise that some small businesses, organisation’s and members of the public are the eyes and ears in our local communities.  This session aims to raise awareness and improve understanding for these individuals and will explore;

• What is meant by the term 'safeguarding adults'
• What is abuse or neglect
• How to recognise abuse or neglect
• How to report concerns

This session will take place on Tuesday 21st November 2023 starting at 1pm aiming to finish by 2pm. You will receive a link to join the session where you can find out more.  There will be the opportunity to ask questions however there is no obligation to contribute, just join us with a cuppa to learn more. 

Practitioners are invited to join this multi- agency lunch and learn session exploring learning and best practice from a Safeguarding Adults Review, Rose.

The session will take place on Tuesday 21^st November between 1pm and 2pm and will be a virtual event via MS Teams.

This session is for frontline practitioners and managers from across the multi-agency adult workforce managing safeguarding, mental capacity assessments (MCA), Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) and Palliative Care across Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool, Lancashire and Cumbria.

Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will:

• Understand what best practice could look like in a complex situation;
• Understand how professionals have worked together to involve Rose and her wishes, and how this can be applied to other people;
• Understand the different ways of looking at supporting people;
• Be confident in reaching out to multi agencies to support best practice, in particular around MCA considerations

 If you have not booked on training before with Lancashire you will need to register.  Please note that whilst a billing address is required there are no plans to charge. 

Trauma informed approach and practice means recognising how common traumatic stress is, the potential impacts of trauma and taking action to avoid people becoming ‘retraumatised’ or unnecessarily stressed by interacting with you or your service.

During this session we will look at how trauma may present in people we are trying to support or work alongside and how to recognise these signs and to realise that all behaviour is communication.

Trauma Informed Practice may also mean reviewing what we do, including possibly making changes to how we deliver and make services accessible to those who struggle to trust professionals.

The aim of this session is to remind professionals that not everyone speaks the same language, and for anyone involved with services it can feel complex and overwhelming, and sometimes even embarrassing.  Often language and the terms used can have stigma attached.  

This session will explore the importance of the language we use in our everyday lives and the impact both good and bad, it can have on the people we are trying to support.
