This week Cumbria Fostering has been celebrating more than 400 kinship carers across the county, who are looking after children who are not their own, during Kinship Care Week 2023, which runs until today.
Kinship carers are relatives or family friends who come forward to raise a child whose parents are not able to care for them. Kinship carers can be grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, relatives or family friends. Kinship Care Week aims to increase visibility of children raised in kinship care and celebrate the enormous efforts and sacrifices of those caring for them.
Cumbria Fostering’s Kinship Care Team manager, Sam Moffatt, said: “It is wonderful to be able to come together to celebrate the inspirational kinship carers we have here in Cumbria during Kinship Care Week. Our kinship carers come forward to provide loving, stable homes for children they care about, preventing hundreds of children entering the care system. They often overcome staggering challenges to ensure children grow up with all the love, care and support they deserve.”

The Old Courthouse is an iconic building in Cockermouth and we share local residents sadness following the recent partial collapse of the building.
We are working with emergency services and partners to do all we can to assess the damage and take immediate steps to protect public safety.
The bridge over the River Cocker has been closed as a precautionary measure and screening will be installed. Please avoid the area and follow any diversions in place.
Visitors to this year’s Carlisle Fireshow are being asked to dig into the bottom of their pockets and support local charities.
Although the event is free to attend, a charity collection is held each year. All donations go towards Rotary in Carlisle (which donates most of its fundraising efforts to local good causes), and the Great Air Ambulance, the charity supported by the Chair of Cumberland, Cllr Carni McCarron-Holmes and the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Abdul Harid’s chosen charities - Cash for Kids, Carlisle Foodbank and Carlisle One World Centre.
Would you like your business or organisation promoted to a crowd of 10,000 this Christmas?
We have a fantastic advertising opportunity available for you to promote your business/organisation with a festive Christmas message at our Christmas Lights Switch On event on Sunday 19 November 2023 in Carlisle city centre. The event will be held between 3pm and 5.30pm.
The 25m2 LED screen will be showing adverts from approximately 1pm. We have 20 slots available each lasting 30 seconds and on a rotation loop and will be an excellent opportunity to promote your organisation to over 10,000 residents and visitors who will be attending the event. The adverts will also be on display during the breaks between performances and hopefully at the end of the show as well until the crowds disperse.
The cost of each advert slot is £160 + VAT. We can accept static artwork or video files.
If you would like to take up the opportunity to place an advert, please contact Val.Haresign@cumberland.gov.uk
Please note, deadline for adverts is Friday 3 November. The slots available are available on a first come, first served basis.
A planning application has been submitted for a major upgrade of one of Maryport’s most prominent buildings.
We are applying to make changes to The Wave Centre, on the town’s historic harbourside.
Locals and visitors alike have helped to inspire the new plans which include a new adventure play centre for young children, refurbishment of the Clip n’ Climb attraction, new multifunctional studio spaces, a community meeting space, party rooms and an enhanced bigger gymnasium. Outside there will be a new bike hub with e-bike charging facilities and storage, along with more attractive landscaping. The entrance area will be improved and staff offices moved upstairs to free up more space on the ground floor.

A decision by Cumberland Council’s Executive this week marks another important step forward for a multi-million pound regeneration scheme in Cumberland.
The Council's Executive rubberstamped a contract award to procure a project delivery team to support the delivery of Phase 2 of the iEC development at Leconfield in Cleator Moor.
We have started sprucing up the traditional fingerpost signs throughout the Cumberland area.
These charming signposts are an iconic and cherished feature of the area and are welcomed by residents and visitors alike. The signs make a very important contribution to the local character and identity of villages and rural areas across Cumberland.
Several of these fingerpost signs originate from the early 20th century and survived World War II because they were not removed and melted down. Consequently, these signs hold significant value for Cumberland Council and help to contribute to the heritage, local character, and identity.

Cumberland Council has set out how it will enhance decision making by inviting residents to become members of its Community Panels
The eight panels each have a budget for community investment. They also serve to identify gaps in provision, bring funders together and lobby for particular local needs. Their decisions are influenced by Community Networks of residents, businesses, the third sector and others.
The panels are made up of the Cumberland ward councillors for that area, but they can appoint up to three unelected members to support their work. This week the council’s Executive committee approved a framework setting out how that will happen.

Cumberland Council is set to transform the way it procures homecare services with an innovative new Homecare Framework, providing flexible and reliable 24-hour care options while maintaining high-quality services tailored to individual needs.
Plans include the implementation of a new framework that allows for more flexible contracts and enables the Council to work with Care Providers to revolutionise Homecare services, as well as maintaining traditional homecare services where they are needed.
People using homecare services and stakeholders will be engaged to develop and shape future service. The new Framework will mean that the Council can respond quickly to changing demand. There will be an increased focus on preserving and improving service quality and sustainability. It is also expected to support the local economy through employment opportunities in the care sector.
