Plans submitted for Workington’s new Innovation Centre
A planning application has been submitted for a new Innovation Centre in Workington.
The Centre is part of the Workington Town Deal - £23.1 million of Government funding for ambitious projects ranging from a new sports village to improvements to Workington Port.
The Innovation Centre will be located on part of the Central Car Park in the town centre and will, primarily, be aimed at digital technology and advanced manufacturing businesses. The vision is to establish Workington Innovation Centre as a distinctive focal point for the incubation and growth of entrepreneurial businesses and will also address the lack of modern office accommodation in Workington.

Update for households in the former Allerdale area
We are aware that there has been some missed collections of refuse and garden waste this week.
Allerdale Waste Services ask that where possible, residents keep their bins out for collection. Additional vehicles and crews are working to try and get back to all missed properties.
If bins have not been emptied by the end of the day on Saturday 9 September, residents should present their bins for collection on the next scheduled collection date.
Due to the current volume of garden waste being collected, crews will initially empty one garden waste bin from each property. This is a temporary measure to enable the team to collect garden waste throughout the rest of the area safely.
Allerdale Waste Services will be reintroducing the collection of paper and card as soon as possible and once all collections of garden waste and glass, cans and plastic recycling have been caught up. Further updates and confirmation of this will be provided as soon as it is available.

Cumberland’s Youth Justice Plan approved
Plans were approved at Cumberland Council’s Executive meeting this week which outlined how the Youth Justice service will build on their successful work tackling criminal behaviour. The plan will now go for approval to the Youth Justice Board.
The Youth Justice Plan makes clear the importance of listening to children and managing the individual causes of offending to prevent children escalating into the criminal justice system. The success of the service has gained backing from central government and resulted in increased funding to continue to improve impact.

Update on Thirlmere road closure
Following Storm Arwen in November 2021, the U7003 along the western shore of Thirlmere had a road restriction that was implemented on an emergency basis under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order, due to fallen trees, significant rockfall and debris on the highway. This made the road hazardous to all users. Damage was caused to adjacent land, known as Rough Crag, which is the responsibility of United Utilities, as the landowners.
Extensive assessments have been made by United Utilities and a geotechnical team. The areas requiring assessment included the full face of Rough Crag and areas out of sight of the general public at the top and to the side of the Crag. This also included assessment of damage to trees, hazards of exposed and loose tree root plates and loose or fallen rock on the Rough Crag section.
These assessments have concluded that the hazards remain to all road users and therefore the road closure needs to continue. The Temporary Traffic Regulation Order has therefore now been extended and had approval from the Secretary of State to remain closed until 11 January 2024 to allow Cumberland Council to introduce a permanent order (on the basis that it will seek to re-open the road when safe to do so).
Statutory consultation and advertisement on the permanent order is open from 25 August to 22 September. Objections and representations will be considered by Cumberland Council’s Highways and Transport Strategic Board.
Cumberland Council statement - RAAC update
Earlier this week we took the decision to temporarily close the events centre at The Sands, Carlisle. We provided the following statement to explain why.
Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said:
“Following the government’s recent change in guidance on the use of RAAC in the construction of school buildings, we have proactively reviewed our public buildings. RAAC is present in the auditorium of the Events Centre at The Sands, Carlisle.
“Although the new main Sands Centre building is unaffected, which includes the pools, gym, sports halls, café, bars and restaurant, the council has taken the decision to close the stand-alone events centre so that further assessments can be made of the older part of the building.
“The 1980s part of the building did not form part of the recent redevelopment work, operates separately from the redeveloped site and is self-contained.
“The events centre building has been inspected on a regular basis in accordance with government guidelines and was compliant until the recent change in government guidance, in late August.
“Improvement works for the older part of The Sands Centre building were part of a phase two of the redevelopment and work was already underway to progress these works. This work will now be accelerated.
“The decision to temporarily close the events space is a precautionary step and does not impact on the day to day running of the main leisure centre.
“Events planned for the auditorium will unfortunately be cancelled until further notice. GLL, the council’s events and leisure provider, will contact ticket holders.
“This is not a decision that Cumberland Council has taken lightly, and we apologise to anyone who has been impacted.
“Further updates will be provided in due course.”
Cumbria Fostering supports first ever Whitehaven Pride event
Cumbria Fostering is inviting members of the LGBTQ+ community to find out more about fostering at the first ever Whitehaven Pride event next weekend on Saturday 16 September.
The fostering service, which works on behalf of Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness councils, will have an information stand at the harbourside event, which is being organised by Proud and Diverse Cumbria.
Those who are interested in finding out more about joining Cumbria’s biggest family will have the opportunity to speak to local foster carers at our stand from 10am to 3pm and to ask any questions they may have.
Our Egremont foster carers Rosie and Claire Crewdson-Price, who will be supporting the event, said: "We would encourage anyone in the LGBTQ+ community who is thinking about fostering to visit the information stand at Whitehaven Pride and find out more. It is a chance to speak to Cumbria Fostering staff and also carers like us and ask any questions you may have and to get started on your fostering journey. You get a lot of rewards from fostering and you can have a big impact on the life of a young person."
If you have at least one permanently spare room and have the time to support and nurture children and young people who’ve often had a difficult start in life, then we’d love to hear from you. In return you will receive an excellent package of support, training and generous payments and allowances for each child you foster.
Find out more about fostering and other upcoming events at cumbriafostering.org.uk or speak to us today on 0300 013 2065.
