Results day for GCSE students!
The nervous wait was over yesterday for students across Cumberland as they received their GCSE results.
This year marks the return to pre-pandemic grading arrangements with senior examiners asked to set boundaries so that overall national results are similar to those of 2019.
Minor fall in Cumberland A-Level results contrasts with national outcome
Early indications of a minor fall in Cumberland A-Level results is a positive against the sharp fall in national results.
Following the high emotion of A-Level results day, a picture of the overall performance of students in Cumberland is beginning to emerge; with a minor fall contrasting to the national record fall in results.
This summer marked the first time students returned to exam-based assessments, following teacher-assessed grades received during the Covid pandemic.
Nationally, there has been a significant reduction in A-Level results this year, as grading readjusts to pre-pandemic levels. It was expected that Cumberland results would mirror this performance.
Improvement works on the A6071 Gretna to Longtown
Cumberland Council is informing residents and businesses that there will be important improvement works on the A6071 Gretna to Longtown.

To enable the council to complete works safely, during the works, the road located between the A6071 Longtown to Gretna will be closed each night, with a signed diversion route in place. People are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the designated diversion route.

New investment plans for Maryport revealed
Locals and visitors alike have helped to inspire new investment plans for Maryport which aim to enhance and develop three of its biggest assets - the town’s high street, harbour and promenade.
The project plans include a splash park and BMX and skate track, an outdoor event space near the harbourside and a new foodie destination on the prom, as well as improvements to the Wave Centre. Designed to have something to appeal to every age group, and with a new wayfinding scheme to tie them all together, the developments will be completed by Summer 2024 – if the Government gives the go-ahead.
Big economic boost from Maryport’s Taste of the Sea event
The third Maryport Taste of the Sea festival, held in partnership with Maryport Town Council, boosted the local economy by more than £790,000, according to independent research.
An estimated 10,000 people came for the event, despite the windy wet weather, and 79% of them made their trip to Maryport specifically for the food and drink festival, which is organised by Cumberland Council.
Three quarters of those attending Taste of the Sea were from Cumberland, and another 13% were from elsewhere in Cumbria. 12% of people were from outside of the county, an increase on 6% in 2022. Visitors from outside of Cumbria came primarily from the North East (33%), South East (21%) and the East Midlands (17%).
